AD Discount in SF Bay Area recommendations

Hi everyone,

New member, first post, been lurking for a while. I know this has been asked on this forum multiple times, "How much of a discount from an AD can I get"

I understand that it there are plenty of variables at play:
1. The watch itself, popular seller high mover?
2. AD needing to push out inventory
3. Many others..

I'm looking to get a Submariner, it will be my first watch of this caliber. I'd like to negotiate at least 20% off as tax here in the SF Bay Area is quite high...

Can anyone recommend a AD or place to buy in the SF Bay Area or even up and around SF all the way down to the SouthBay?

Thanks much

I think You will have a very hard time getting 20% off a stainless Sub.I think You will be lucky to get half that or even 5% off.Now if You are talking about a solid Gold Sub then 20% is in the Ballpark.

Thanks, I think it's just a reality and I'm prepared to pay but I'd like to give it the old college try with a few dealers before paying more as I've read a few members here getting close to that.

Thanks for your reply!

I am guessing that if someone got 20% off a Stainless Sub that they had an amazing relationship with their AD,Not a First Time Buyer.

This may be a tough one. SF Bay Area is quite well-heeled and getting a discount on the SS models should not be expected. The number of dealers in the area is quite high as well and you'll spend a lot of time looking for a deal.

There are at least a few dealers within a short distance from the Union Square in San Francisco. There is Shreve at Stanford, Davidson and Licht at Valley Fair at least one dealer in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Happy hunting!

Just saying.

Thanks I'm seriously considering this as an option. I want to maximize the value of the watch. Sorry for my ignorance but how is depreciation on a Sub would buying a used one have a larger return if I re-sale down the road vs new?

Thanks again everyone.

Let the other Guy pay the depreciation.Buy a gently used full set and save the difference.

Don't bother with Shreve & Co. They won't budge much, at least the SF location won't. They "may" at the Palo Alto location but not 100% sure.

Have you checked with Joe Escobar in Campbell? They have a decent selection.

Trusted Sellers here or Bobs Watches in LA is another option. Check out DavidSW...A trusted seller and has a website.

Buy pre-owned from a trusted seller on TRF, save the sales tax and get a discount.

Since you are in SF, have you considered preowned from reputable sellers like HQ Milton?

Buy new in box with papers from a trusted dealer here.. takyua, davidsw, fnfz4 etc. etc etc...

You probably won't get 20% off MSRP, but you'll come damn close with these guys. I think they normally list them NIB for $7500ish.. just check the for sale section.

If you buy a used one in good shape from a dealer here you can get it just south of 7K typically. Pealing the stickers and having a new one will cost you ~$500. I bought new because I had no plans of reselling it and like that my name is on the warranty card.

+1 for HQMilton

If you are looking for a very modern sub ie ceramic then they my not be able to help. However email them and ask.

They have an amazing collection of vintage and older modern rolexes

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone! It's very helpful and I think I've decided to just go with a used watch :) not fully sure but it seems like the thing to do.

Are there any resources to gauge the price of the watch? I'm not trying to be a low-baller/haggler here and I have the money but I just want to get the best price and not get overcharged, and also just trying to set my expectations here. For cars I can just look up something like KBB or general rule of thumb is never pay list price...but I have no idea if it's the same for watches...Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks again everyone.

For used subs, depending on age and condition, I think you're looking at around $5500-6500 for pre-cerachrome and $6500-7500 post-cerachrome (excluding anniversary, LVC/Hulk, and special vintage model subs) all w/date complication. I think, because of the more modern case, glide-lock clasp, and cerachrome bezel you should go with the sub date ref. #116610 priced anywhere between $6500-7500--minus between $500-800 in the range provided if you're looking for a sub without a date complication

Go to watchrecon.com... search the model you are looking for. If you look at the bottom of each thumbnail you'll see a price & +/- range for what these have been selling for. Just be careful browsing those listings, not all sellers are created equal :)
