Are Panerai and Rolex in the same bracket?
Six years ago I met Panerai's CEO Angelo Bonati at the re-opening of the brand's original boutique in Florence. Panerai was just on the rise back then, fast gaining popularity. I asked him where he'd like to see his brand positioned, and he said "right up at the top, along with Rolex''.
I'm wondering how many people think he's achieved his goal? Is Panerai in the same league as Rolex? How would one define "league''? (Personally, I don't really fancy Panerai watches but there's no denying the brand has enjoyed phenomenal success in the past 5-6 years and is hugely popular). |

Good Question- Panerai certainly have a huge Following- Even I have just bought one (delivered in 4 weeks hopefully).
The Price of Panerai is fairly similar to that of Rolex but they only produce around 40,000 watches a year approximately whereas Rolex produce over 1 million these days. Panerai are certainly more exclusive in terms of Ad's here in the UK and in number of each model available (not Daytona level). I think they are not at rolex level due to the numbers produced , but they are in my eyes more exclusive

Like toph said, I consider them a bit more exclusive, due to their limited production numbers and AD's.

Statistically they might be more exclusive but aesthetically to my eyes they don't look exclusive at all except from some solid gold Panerais which are really good looking
I mean can you imagine yourself wearing a suit with a panerai on your wrist or better an Hublot ? I really respect both brands and to my eyes Hublot are desperately good looking watches but they don't look really formal IMO

I'm still dubious paying all that money for something with a retuned generic movement...they look kinda cool and I like the beaten up old straps but there are way more other brands I'd choose before Pam.

To me Pams are nice, but Rolex just touch a string in me.

But seriously for a second, they will have less staff, smaller factory, less overheads and yet they sell many (in proportion) WG and Gold peices as part of there range , mostly leather straps etc - They will be doing more than just fine

More exclusive, I think NO. More hard to find than Rolex I think YES.
In my ADs, they always have a lot of Rolex (except for Subdate 16610 right now), but no single Panerai in their showcase. |

Sorry guys but Rolex is not exclusive. Panerai is a great watch with good movements however they may not be quite as refined as rolex movements. I cannot say one is better just different. For dress the 231 rad is unbeatable IMHO.

That's why marketing is so interesting, trying to answer questions like this where one's preception contributes to the status assessment.
Rolex out spends nearly all other watch makers combined on advertising and has been doing it for decades. Their name recognition and branding success is notable. Of course, what does that have to do with the quality of their watches and how can one measure them against Panny when so many criteria for doing so exist. Panny definitely creates Daytona and Ferrari levels of demand. They always make less than they can sell. They were quite aware the they could never attain the watchmaker bragging rights they desired without in-house movements. You've seen a constant march up the status scale starting with the p2002 and now a turbillion variant. Soon they will be all in-house. For right or wrong, this is a viewed as a big deal. The average guy walking the streets has never heard of Panerai, so in the greater market Panerai hasn't reached Rolex in status. Of course, by that measure neither have Patek and Lange, two brands widely regarded to be on a higher plane by the WIS cadre. |

I have to agree with Trurolexer and JF23. Picked up my first Pannie about a week ago. I like Rolex but Panerai's have that something special about them that makes them very addicting. I like the way you can put a gator strap on it to dress it up or a ss bracelet for casual wear. For me, the low production numbers, IMHO, makes the watch even more desirable.

I just can't get over the weird clasp thingy over the crown. Visually distracting for me.

I have one of both, for me the Panerai is better to wear, lighter and looks a lot nicer, as for the movements, i'm not too bothered as mine has the El Primero, but the newer chronos seem to be going up in price but with very little being added in terms of development and new movements.
Rolex on the other hand will always be one of those watches that everyone wants, it's pretty much 100% in-house and their history and marketing is second to none, Panerai have a long way to go to catch up with them.

I think Paneria in house movements (8 days and 10 days) are real nice and I might get one some day when I have the cash (I think they start at 12K).
I would have trouble paying 5K for a watch with a ETA movement that sells for 100 bucks.IMO I think Rolex is the best out there for the Price! But, They sure make a nice looking watch! |

Yes, I understand they sell, but I can't believe they let me walk out of the store when I was willing to drop almost $12,000.00 in CASH. Hell, they wouldn't even throw in a strap I've almost decided to drop $700-$800 on a Custom PAM Hommage and forget about it

The simplicity of the dial, the superb alligator strap and the gold hands, not to mention the JLC 8-day movement, one of the best movements ever made. Easily as elegant, or perhaps more so, than any Rolex |

In my city both Rolex ADs carry PAMs. I think that are as easily available as Rolex. I dont know why are they called exclusive. They are just out numbered multiple times by Rolex due to the popularity.
