Rolex to be toppled from #1 on COSC List?
Today's e-mail blast from WatchTime (yeah, I know, they are more about headlines then substance) suggests that Tissot is going to make a point to de-throne Rolex as #1 in most watches COSC certified per year with their new 80 hour Power Reserve Automatic.
My thought is: go ahead and COSC 1,000,000 units to beat out Rolex, then find yourself with 500,000 leftover COSC certified movements to figure out what to do with. Tissot is a venerable brand name with recognition but that alone probably won't sell them all. Your thoughts? |

I don't think Rolex would even care.

If they are doing it to "dethrone" Rolex, then Tissot is run by idiots.
If they are doing it to spiff up their image, then I guess it might work. I'm sure that their marketing department has done some research on the matter.

I suppose that Tissot could do that.. They do sell more watches per year than Rolex.
But I have to agree with everybody else. What would be the point ??

Have to agree... and the most accurate watch I've ever owned is not COSC certified.

I agree with Grady....The only positive point I can see, is from the marketing aspect of Tissot...all of a sudden the media is making statements of Tissot taking X from Rolex. Rolex has a very strong brand name, whereas Tissot, not so much. So the general public sees that Tissot has more COSC certifications than Rolex, for the non WIS, this may say that Tissot is equal to or greater than Rolex. Even when your a huge underdog, being compared to the Gold Standard is a good thing. Just a random thought!

its worth the $25 for each cert to tissot but rolex probably doesn't care. if anything, rolex will do what pp, ap and jlc etc do and make their own testing standards inhouse.

Question: What's the value of a COSC certification?
Answer: Zero point zero.

I don't really see the link between Rolex and Tissot. Completely different target audience. Nobody will take this into account when buying a Rolex. I care very little about COSC and I care even less that Tissot has more COSC certified watches than Rolex. My fabourite watches aren't even COSC certified, and I couldn't care less. Just my two cents.

marketing....despite it not actually meaning much, COSC certification is an easy way to say "quality".

That's good...but will the movements be swiss made???
I had a couple Tissot's back in the day. (at least 15 years ago) Had a Ti 200m WR diver pretty cool for less than $400 and I had a more dressy watch in which I sold to a friend of mine...told him it's a good swiss made watch. I probably sold it to him for $150 A month later he calls me, says the back fell off and there was a sticker that said made in Hong Kong. I was pretty disappointed and contacted thier customer service. They actually wrote me back that some of the parts are made overseas to keep cost down but all assembled in Switzerland. I think they were full of it, b/c why would they leave that sticker on there. But for a few hundred $$ what can you expect. |

Well there are so many movements that are never tested its no longer a big deal.
No movements from Japan or German movements so why is the big news. Swatch group makes great watches Tissot once part of Omego now Swatch group no big deal, it's all marketing. |

Let's not disparage a good brand...
Tissot is not likely to ever have a "sticker" inside that would say "Hong Kong".. I would say that is total BS unless proved otherwise.. (or the Tissot in question is a fake) Tissot and Omega merged decades ago (~1930) then were bought up by the Swatch Group in the 80's.. ETA movements, Swiss Made and typical Swiss markings inside.. Hong Kong sticker ??? - Unlikely !!!

I have seen some Tissot watches at retail, they need to spruce up the watch designs pronto before they even start talking COSC, imho.
