Tudor is meant to be a cheaper in price than Rolex for a reason. Get the sub life is too short.

The Ginault looks nice and I could see why someone might prefer it over a BB58.

I have a very classic taste with modern expectations and I like the Tudor brand quite a bit because of how they fit within that for me :)
I like the Tudor crystal AR coating and easily adjustible bracelet, but the 14060 can be modified to have those as well.

However my 116610 is far and away my favorite watch in my collection!
That is a nice one, a little to big for my 6.75" wrist though.

I think with the BB58, you will get tired of the watch early, so my vote is for the 14060 Sub.

Submariner 14060 or BB58?

Both are great watches. I had a 41mm black bay before getting my 14060. I ended up selling the black bay because it felt redundant and I was reaching for my sub more.

As such, my pick would be for the 14060 - one with a tritium dial

Both are awesome watches, but there’s nothing like a Sub, especially a 5 digit. I suggest that you look hard at the 14060M - it’s the last of the breed and one of the best references. And, it’s got drilled through lugs.

Why do you think that is? The vintage aesthetic and gold accents?

I agree with the boredom and I do think it has to do with what you’ve mentioned.

The BB58 feels more like a watch for collectors than a 1 and only. It’s strengths in aesthetics are also its weaknesses, to me anyway. Some days I just don’t want all that gilt…

If the OP were to decide on the Tudor, I’d recommend using the other portion of the budget for a second watch. Maybe a 114270 Explorer or a Speedy of some type. This would nicely offset those times where the 58 feels like too much.

I have the BB58, but I really miss my 5 digit Sub. Because the BB58 is relatively inexpensive, just get both! That’s my plan.

I think the 14060M is as close to a perfect watch as there is. Modern specs, but vintage tool Watch aesthetic.

I say this as a huge fan of the BB58.

I 100% agree. I have a BB58 and love it but can see how I would fall out of love one day. It just does not have a timeless display.

When I put on a five digit sub it felt timeless.

I agree with others. While the BB58 is a very nice watch, it isn’t in the same league as the 14060.

The bb is objectively better but trust me - if it’s a sub you really want don’t get the Tudor. You’ll regret it.

The BB58 is a fine watch but I eventually parted with mine. I bought a 14060 to tide me over until my 124060 came in, then sell the 14060. Well, that was months ago and the 14060 still isn't going anywhere nor is the 124060.

Sold BB58 to make room for an 114060. Sold 114060 to repurchase the BB58. Go figure.....

If you have never had a Sub, get the Sub. It's an icon for a reason.

To me five digit is pinnacle Rolex. Things have gone only downhill from there (big, blingy, less reliable movements).
Tudor makes nice stuff at a great price point. I look at them as the kind of watch that offers something unique when you already have some other nice watches. Think white dial GMT or the recent red bezel.
So my vote is sun and specifically five digit. Personal favorite is the 16600 as the sub alternative that isn’t a sub, but more substantial, date, but no cyclops. Doesn’t get better in my book.

The both are fantastic watches, it all depends on your personal preference, which one speaks to you more.

I also own a (was NOS) 16600 so have a direct comparison to the best built of all the 5 series Rolex divers.

The 14060 is unquestionably an icon. But, and here's the thing, if it didn't say Rolex on the dial, you wouldn't take more than a few seconds to dismiss it if you held both it and a BB58 in each hand.

As part of a collection, yes. As your one and only? Unless you want the icon. the "Rolex", then in you may be disappointed in how "cheap" the 14060 will feel compared to the much more modern BB58. It's completely functional. And its a great watch, but its hollow link folded endlink bracelet, stamped and folded clasp and effectively bent piece of wire bezel click spring are no comparison to the modern offerings. And that's comparing new with new.

My 16600 is the watch that will never leave my collection, but a $400 seiko diver has a materially better bezel action (in terms of quality feel)

This may be an unpopular opinion on a Rolex forum but in terms of objectivity, it is 100% correct.

But this is not always an objective process.

Owning the 16600, I'd take the BB58 all day every day. In fact, you could have the black, the blue and the BB Pro for less than a mint full set 14060.

Having owned a 16610 I'd do the same.

If I'd not owned either (the sub is what got me interested in in the Sea Dweller) then I might have a different view because I'd not scratched that itch.

Have a 16610 and owned both black and blue BB58…… Tudors are gone but Sub is still here!

As an owner of a 14060, I say get the sub because, you will regret it if you compromise and tell yourself your black bay is your submariner substitute. Regrets in life are very hard to live with.

And I say this as a future tudor owner, eagerly awaiting his watch. Nothing really interests me in the about the BB58....well ok, the blue one maybe.

Faux rivets and the gilt dials trouble me for some reason. I'm sure I will come around eventually. Hell, I eventually came around on snowflake hands.

Agreed, unless you have wrists much over 7", the 14060 is the way to go, no-nonsense and doesn't shout "Look at me". Some complain the hands are two thin but I find it quite legible without the date and GMT complications. Yes, it doesn't have an easily adjustable bracelet but it's light weight means it doesn't move around as much on your wrist compared to the maxi cases.

The 16600 is nice too.
