Looking for the perfect travel watch... any ideas?
Hello!
I'm new to collecting watches, and only have just one automatic, a Seiko SARG007 that I enjoy very much. I travel regularly for work, and I have decided I want a dedicated travel watch. I teach classes for the military and other military type organizations. I have compiled a list characteristics of the perfect travel watch for me, and I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a watch with the following: Automatic movement that hacks Day and Date (like the Hamilton Khaki King or Seiko 5) Military time Rotating 12 hour bezel (so I can track my home time zone for calling the wife) or a second time zone. It would help if the watch was well under 2,000 dollars, as I am a man of modest means and sometimes travel to some dicey locations where something like a rolex or even a tudor might make me a even more of a target if I leave the base. Does this watch even exist? |

GMT MASTER if your looking for ROLEX but you'll have to without the Day function. Perhaps better to look in the non ROLEX forum

There are many micro brands that use the ETA 2893 movement that is used a lot for watches that track two time zones. Companies such as Sinn should have a watch to meet your requirements.

Very helpful Kevin, thanks for the specifics to help the OP. I have/have had more than one watch with ETA 2824's and they are some great watches. I certainly didn't know which brands or mvmts had all the functions however.

You may have trouble finding everything you need in one watch.
Not sure if you are looking specifically for new or used. A nice used Omega 2534.50 GMT can be picked up for under $2K. Just got one and love it. It will have some but not all of your specified requirements. |

I think the Muhle Glashutte Seebataillon is a perfect candidate. I travel a lot as well and this is a titanium watch with high water resistance, GMT 24hr time, and date. It is light and works well in any type of weather.

Dollar for dollar the Squale 1545 Maxi Dial is a great watch. IMO perfect for traveling when you don't want to take your rolexes to a place where you may get robbed.

I have a Breitling Aerospace that I wore on a trip out of the country a couple of years ago. Loved the dual time zone aspect and understated looks of it...didn't attract too much attention while out and about. You can pick them up pre-owned in the 800-2000k range all day long.

it would be good to have one with two time zones but you'd have to add a few zeros to your budget number

I don't think you'll find day of the week very often but you can take a look at Sinn. Steinhart and Squale make nice GMT homage watches

No day and not sure about hacking. But just picked up a vintage seiko 6117 6410 with a gym hand and inner rotating bezel.

I travel a lot for work and my companion is always my 16570. It flies under the radar and can be used as a second time zone.

I'm not aware of a good candidate with a day function, but I would otherwise take a look at the Sinn 856 UTC or the Omega 2534/2538 (great white). I believe there are several Glycines that could be decent candidates too.

There is always the options of going Schwarzkopf and wearing a watch on each wrist set to a different time zone. Not the most elegant but very functional....

I have a Breitling Avenger II GMT which has everything you need except day feature. It's a great watch which I picked up for 4K brand new.

You can perhaps, negotiate a deal on a jaeger le coultre master control. This watch should be about 10,000$'usd, but I've seeen them as low,as,2500$ used. An absolute steal for under 3,000$. If these watches had a Rolex logo on then,,they'd be 15,000$ easily. I love,Rolex, but the master control is a really simple, reliable, beautiful watch. I don't own one,,though.

yea day/date +GMT doesn't seem to be a very common option for mechanical movements.
I think you could do something like an Oris Artelier Complication, which has subdials for day/day plus a 24 hour 2nd time zone subdial. But might be a little dressy for world travel in tough spots. Maybe a Ball Worldtimer, which is a worldtimer with both day/date. By military time? are you just looking for the dial to have like the standard 12 indices with like smaller numbers for the military time? A true 24-hour watch, would make this tough. |

Look at Steinhart GMTs ETA movements solidly built watches and should be well under a thousand bucks
