Dick Gautier, ‘Get Smart’ Actor, Dies at 85

Dick Gautier who played Hymie on "Get Smart" for six episodes has died at age 85.

So long, Dick. Thanks for the laughs.
Dick Gautier, who is best known to baby-boomers as Hymie the Robot in “Get Smart,” died Friday in Los Angeles of pneumonia, according to his daughter, Denise. He was 85.

Born in Culver City, Calif., Gautier quickly helped Hymie make an impression in the 1960s spy spoof. Despite the fact that he only appeared in six episodes over four seasons, Gautier’s deadpan delivery helped the robot become a memorable fan favorite.

Gautier’s film and TV credits after “Get Smart” include appearances in “When Things Were Rotten,” “Love, American Style,” “Fantasy Island,” “Fun With Dick and Jane,” and “Charlie’s Angels.”

Gautier was also well known in the theater community for playing Conrad Birdie in the original production of “Bye, Bye Birdie” in 1960. The production, which also starred Dick Van Dyke, earned Gautier a Tony nomination.

What a great character. I remember one episode where Max told Hymie to “Kill the light” as they were leaving the room. Hymie pulled out a suppressed pistol and shot it. As a 10 year old, that was very funny.

RIP sir.

They recently ran a weekend of Get Smart episodes and they had one where Max had to disassemble Hymie. Loved the show and enjoyed Hymie.

Nice guy. When I was in college I worked in a neighborhood grocery store in the San Fernando Valley. He lived in the area and used to come in regularly.

Cannot believe he was only on 5 episodes.. his impact made it seem like he was in every one. Sad, but a great life indeed
