Anticipatory “OMG what was Rolex thinking?! Why did they change that?” thread. It’s t

Every year around this time we see the announcements for new models and changes to existing models. We see a lot of “Rolex doesn’t know what they’re doing!” or “what we’re they thinking” comments and threads as many in this forum go nuts complaining about any and all changes.

I know change is hard, but I assure you, everything will be fine. Whatever changes they make, give it time and eventually you will probably learn to appreciate what changes they make and why they made them.

But if you like, just vent your frustrations here. Maybe we can eliminate 10 or 20 threads if we try for just a centralized complaint thread.

I do not like that they took the lume off the hands on Romans dials and off the hands on 36mm DD stick dials.

Good try, but there will a BUNCH of complaint threads and like in the past, they will go away and most of the haters will have the "incoming" of the model they bashed.

I don’t like that they decided to discontinue the paul newman dial daytonas, the batman, and all the other watches I own.

I will entertain offers. No low ballers please.

Discontinuing the Explorer 1 39mm in favor of the 36mm.

Makes no difference to me. I haven’t really like anything they’ve come up with in many years. If they keep the current 36mm Explorer 1 I may try to get one later this year. Everything else is ugly, big, shiny and pretty much the worst they ever made.
But they are doing the right thing obviously since they are selling every single watch they produce, even the most hideous stuff that nobody wanted a few years ago.
So here come the diamond studded titanium dinner plates for the “emerging markets”.

There is ONLY one watch I would like to see and I think there is less than a zero percent chance of that happening. A DD in a 38MM.

Oh we'll undoubtedly have more than a few threads like that.... and I'm sure I'll contribute to them!

What will happen is this -

- Rolex won't produce any of the things lots people have been hoping for. e.g. a "Coke" GMT.
- What they may produce is one "big hitter" (like a new Daytona for example), and the rest will be a mm shaved off here, a slightly fatter handset there, some new colour dials, maybe some new case material options (e.g. rose gold on watches it wasn't an option for before), and lastly maybe something completely polarising and left-field that no-one asked for or could've imagined - e.g. the VTNR, the Palm Fronds, etc.
- Initially there will be outrage on here! A tiny percentage (maybe 5%) will love it all, some (~25%) will hate it and claim Rolex is finished, everyone else (70%) will be in the "indifferent" or "boring old Rolex" camp.
- A few days/weeks will go by, and the percentages will start to shift to something like 30% love, 10% hate, 60% indifferent.
- A few more weeks/months will go by and the 'incoming' threads will start and suddenly it'll all be, "Congrats!", "What an incredible piece", "My next watch right there!"
- A hardcore 5% will continue to dislike forever, while everyone else will be buying donuts for ADs like they're going out of fashion, and grovelling up to SA's will their "bio's" in hand. Oh and the left field piece(s) will be hailed as an "incredible investment".

Happens every year.

I'm tired of Rolex changing case size, dial colours, metals and bracelets. I'd like them to come up with a real new model, for a change.

No doubt there will be a bunch of people complaining that Rolex have classic designs that gently evolve over the decades, and don’t change all their models every year with numerous special editions and anniversary models.

I’m just along for the Rolex ride. If I don’t like it I don’t buy it. Plenty of back catalogue and plenty of other manufacturers to choose from. Have at it, Rolex.

I hope they don't come out with a yellow gold GMT on jubilee. I had the yellow gold spot reserved for a blue sub.

The level of discomfort people have with change astounds me. It’s fascinating to observe. This time of year, it never fails. The “oh no, I hate change so much that I can’t bare to see this” and “Rolex is ruining their watches” makes me lol.

It usually only lasts for about 2 weeks to 30 days and then those same people end up living it. Quite often anyway.

Isn't it a little more than that?

As someone brilliantly observed in another thread (paraphrasing), "The people who own the previous model dislike the changes; the people who don't, like them."

I've not seen a survey to show that's true, but it seems to be weighted in that direction.

Both groups are exposed to the same change, so I don't think it's the change per-se that people have discomfort with. I think it's more related to the previous-model owners, "Feeling left behind," or that their model is, "No longer the latest and greatest."

I'd love to read the psychology of it.

I think it depends on the person. I, for one, owned an 11 series Sub when they released the 12 series. I couldn't wait to dump my 11 series for the stunning 12 series. It's definitely subjective on if a person likes the changes or not.
