PAM 512 vs PAM 572?

Hey Everyone,

Had my eye on both the 512 and the 572 for a bit, and got to try on the 572 today.

I hate to say it, but it seemed just a tad too big for me. (Wrists are about 6"). I like the 512, and I'm ok with the size, but I'm not sure if I'm too into a manual vs an automatic.

Both are beautiful if you ask me. If I went with the 512, I'd love it whenever I looked at it, but not sure how I feel about winding it always. If I went with the 572, well, it's also beautiful, but I'll probably be bothered some by it's size, but comforted by it's automatic movement.

Wondering if any of you own either of those, or both, or if anyone was in the same predicament and can offer any suggestions or advice?

Cheers in advance!

I don't own either, but I've had several hand-wound Panerai and the hand-winding mechanism has always been a plus, not a minus. I have a 338 which is also a 42mm Radiomir and hand-wound. I find that winding it kind of lets me interact with the watch, which I like.

Your mileage may vary....

Just picked up my first Pam, the 512. I love winding it and it's a fantastic watch. Panerai manual movements seem to be more reliable than the automatic ones too.

If you have a largish collection and you switch up watches often than winding doesn't make such a big difference as you'd probably be winding your automatic you haven't worn in days anyways. Here's a pic of my 512 on a vintage leather nato as I wait for my ordered strap to arrive.

Get the 512. Manuel winding is part if the charm of owning a Panerai. Good luck!

You'll enjoy the manual. It'll take a bit of getting used to if you haven't had one before. I wouldn't worry about it not being automatic. 👍

Just got my 512, first Panerai and very happy with it!

I prefer the slimness of the 42 mm pillow case, coupled with no date makes it super classy. Stealthy and doesn't scream Panerai, but the devil is in the details.

Alright, you guys have convinced me. Gonna pull the trigger on a beautiful 512. Thanks so much, and i'll be sure to post photos once I have it.

One further question though. Although I like the black strap it comes with, how easy is it to order other straps from Panerai? I'd like to try and get ahold of a brown alligator strap if possible. Cheers!

Your dealer should be able to order a strap for you. It takes a 22mm - which makes strap hunting very easy. The blackstrap is very nice and supple and lends the watch a pretty elegant look. I'm going with something a little more rustic to balance out the quite elegant case.
