Buying in Miami/FLL Advice please....

Hi all, from over the pond....

I am flying into FLL next month, will be stopping over three or four days before joining a boat in the British Virgin Islands and sailing back over the pond. I was thinking about picking up a Rolex in FLL/Miama whilst there. I am travelling on a British passport and live in Europe.

What are my chances of picking up a SS Sports model whilst there - something like a GMT II BLNR or SubLV if I can find or arrange in advance? Should I expect to get some discount, and are there any tax implications/refunds available for Europeans in transit? Ill be flying in/ out of FLL but will stop a few days and have a car.

Any advice appreciated....

I don't know about the taxes, but one of the trusted sellers here can ship to you in FLL.

Chances of finding either one of them is good here. Try David in Orlando or Thanh in Texas, ( he'll ship overnight to your hotel). There are other sellers located in Florida.

When you return to the U.K. or EU that's when I guess you have to declare it and pay some sort of tax. Not sure what that would be. Hopefully it's not so bad that it wouldn't pay to buy here. Someone who has done it will probably chime in.

Good luck and enjoy the states.

Matthew Bain is a world class dealer in Miami, vintage and current models. You might give him a shout to see what's on hand or available.

Thanks all. Ill keep monitoring in case any info re tax etc is posted. As you know, if you buy in London there is a significant rebate for non EU residents. Im not sure if there are reciprocal arrangements in place with the US, or indeed what proportion of retail price is tax in the US...

Be sure to check out design district while in Miami. Many watch boutiques in a condensed area.

David has several BLNR's and one Sub LV. He's in Orlando, Fl. Here's a link.

Comparing prices, you're better joining lists in the UK and picking up when you're next there.

I'm in Florida at least every year and never buy there.

USA prices are slightly higher , then add VAT on entering the UK or whatever taxes would apply and prices are way higher.

I'd stick to the UK

Multiple trusted sellers here on the forum are located in parts of Florida. Reach out to them and let them know what you are interested in. Since it would be a private transaction, I would just wear the new watch back home.

This for sure. Best place to go in Miami. He's very amenable and so is his staff.

Check with David SW , he's in Orlando but he drives down to Miami frequently maybe you can arrange with him and meet in Miami with the watches you're interested in, or if you have time and are willing to drive go to his shop in Orlando.

They Seybold building in Downtown Miami is where all the dealers are.

You can walk in and walk out with any watch you want and there are many many stores, on many many floors of that building. All high end diamonds and watches.

I will send you a direct message.

Thank you all for these replies. It really shows the strength of this remarkable forum. I've been looking at the classifieds here also. Whilst AD prices are probably the lowest in the world at the moment in the UK, it has made sought after watches hard to source, at least around London which is enjoying a bit of a tourist boom due to the now favorable exchange rates and tax breaks for none EU buyers. Stories abound about buyers (particularly from China) snapping up Rolex as if they were Timex!

If you go to an AD in Miami / FTL you will be able to buy any SS Rolex you want, except for Daytona and maybe BLNR...depends...sometimes they have them.

Subs and LV Subs are easily and readily available. No Problem

You will pay Full Retail plus sales tax. There will be no discount.

So you walk in the dealer, pay for your Sub and walk out with it.

What happens upon importation into UK is up to you....but you'll have the watch you want with almost no effort.

I live in Miami and I know the market quite well.

There are no tax refunds for tourist, so you'll have to pay 6% +$50.

Discounts at ADs on SS models will be tough but not impossible. I'd avoid Mayor's or Tourneau and head for a mom and pop.

I'd recommend heading to downtown stopping by Kirk's, a Rolex AD, seeing what you can negotiate and then heading to the Seybold building. Then, weight your options and think about the premium your willing to pay for an AD Rolex vs a grey market Rolex.

Any help or tips PM me and I'd be happy to help. Cheers

Pm davidsw, talk with him and arrange either driving over or shipping to your hotel. Instant savings, instant delivery, zero problems, no time wasted "shopping around".

I've lived in Miami all my life. Try CRM, Kirks, Matthew.. Now while I didn't buy my Rolex in Miami I still recommend those spots. Seybold building is good but expect to spend half a day there. It's a mega mall of jewelry/gold/watches. It's floors after floors of shops. Now in Miami prices are high. Barely any discount. I had to buy my watch from a trusted seller that I found here. Sohais. He's in Atlanta. Buying from him I saved about $700-$800 + sales tax on my first Rolex. Good luck.

There's also jizeal or Neal I believe his name is among S. Florida sellers that post here regularly. There are loads of sellers in Miami up to Broward, wish I could be of more help. I think Dan Fernandez has a good reputation as well. I've noticed by traipsing around on eBay or chrono24 by geography you can find a lot of sellers and check out their reputations and pre-negotiate the purchase.

I recently purchased my first Rolex from the Rolex botique in the Miami Design District. It's a great place to walk around and see many other watch shops should you desire. At Rolex ask for Sandy, he is a French salesman with outstanding customer service and good knowledge of the brand. He will make sure you get what you are looking for. I highly recommend working with him!

Not true. OP please do your homework and don't take blanket statements like the above as truth. I know people who have gotten discounts, in the 5-10% range on SS sport models, and if you can ship out of state, the dealer will not charge you tax.

YMMV and good luck!

Go to Miami and ask for a discount on a SS sub and you will be laughed at.

Does it hurt to ask? Nope...

Will it happen? Nah...

Should the OP expect a discount? Nah..

Also, I'm sure the OP doesn't want to drive all over the place on his vacation to look for watches. Miami to Orlando is about a 4hr drive ONE WAY...depending on traffic... so keep that in mind when you advise..

Again I agree to this. No discounts in Rolex in Miami. Before I bought from SohAIS I visited many places here in Miami. I was recommend by many people and went into as a good referral. Nobody gave me discount. When I said prices I was getting from sellers like David in Orlando or SohAIS in Atlanta they laughed and said good luck being real. I was going in cash straight buy. In Seybold building I saw too many used watches in bad conditions with no box papers. People there seemed too shady. BTW I'm 35. Born in 1982. Came to Miami in 1983. Been here all my life. I run my own business. So I know Miami people really well. 2 places I went to treated me bad. Guess I didn't fit the "description" of an expensive watch buyer. One guy asked me how many Rolex's I owned and what did I know about them. Anyways I'm in the market for my 2nd Rolex. A batman GMT. I'll be going again with my guy in Atlanta SohAIS. Glad for this one I wont have to go around looking for prices. I did my homework and price is good.

Try Weston jewelers. I don't know about a discount, but they will certainly treat you well and may have what you are looking for.
