Shipping Question

Just bought a new sub c and can't wait for it to be perched on my wrist. I know FedEx and UPS only insures up to $1,000. What would you suggest for shipping?

Thanks!

Shipping Question

You can do registered mail and insure to the full value, but it will take longer...

Not actually sure if Certified does that.

USPS Registered Mail does. Either way, I'd do Registered if I was doing USPS.

UPS actually insures up to $50k, I believe, but don't quote me on that.

Look into getting an account with ParcelPro - you can insure upto 75k and shipments are sent via UPS or FedEx

Parcel Pro is the way to go if not using USPS. I detest USPS. You could also simply wing it with FedEx.

I have the same feeling about USPS. I also wouldn't sleep at all if it wasn't fully insured.

Apologies, I meant registered mail.

I've actually had better success shipping with the USPS. I own a small business and ship and receive a lot of packages. Have had major problems with UPS, shipping insured, well packaged, UPS Destroys the package and doesn't honor the insurance claim. UPS almost always sends additional billing for items shipped via online pricing. Have never had a problem with USPS after shipping/receiving hundreds of packages with them. FEDEX is also good.

I called them and they said they will only insure a watch up to $1000. It falls into a luxury item.

I shipped a Rolex 2 weeks ago from the UPS store with $5000 in insurance. I had the store provide a "pack and ship guarantee" which they said would make a potential claim much easier. The insurance cost over $100. I clearly stated the package contained a watch. As a side note, the UPS store owner told me that $5000 insured was the low threshold to have the item stored in a lock box in the truck and a locked cage at any distribution warehouses.

Are you the one who will be instructing the seller on the choice for shipping your new Sub to you?

My thoughts as well...wouldn't the seller insure it for its journey to your house?

Shipping Question

Thanks - in that case he prolly won't qualify for ParcelPro. I suggest he go to a "pack/ship" store to have it securely packed (double boxed and tamper proof/security taped along all outer box seams). Then personally take it to USPS and send Registered Mail Insured at full value with tracking.

This is safest route for the first-time shipper of a high value item.

Great thanks for the info. I reached out to parcelpro, I'll see what they say.

Like everyone suggests, Parcel Pro is the way to go. I've used them to ship many watches and have never had any problems.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Sorry if I complicated my answer in my opening sentence - the shipper has to qualify for ParcelPro. He would need to setup the account.

I was recommending USPS Registered.

If you choose USPS Registered Mail, you'll have more than enough insurance included in the cost, to cover a SUB. You just have to write down the value of the item shipped. You get insurance up to 50k included.

Someone here suggested "DHL" to me - the item doesn't leave their hands - delivery service is not contracted out. Haven't use DHL, so don't personally know all facts. UPS is the counter accept for DHL (must designate that you wish DHL ship, can insure too) ? - if no actual DHL store front, if I remember correctly what he said. Forgive me if my recall is incorrect, or if you have experience otherwise - I would appreciate knowing.

Mon, quite aptly, did tell me not to quit my day job , you know...

Cheers,
DM

It's not worth opening a parcel pro account unless you plan on shipping frequently. Besides, PP's application is fairly stringent and requires references.

Like other have suggested, USPS "registered mail" offers insurance up to $50k but the downside is that it's extremely slow, like maybe 10-14 days coast to coast.

Another alternative is USPS "Priority Express" which offers insurance up to $5k and is usually overnight delivery or 2-day at worst. You will be slightly under-insured, but not by much.

Edited to add: I just realized that USPS regular 2-3 day priority mail also has insurance up to $5k now. Used to be lower, I think.

DHL may be good for international express but not in top 3 for domestic counter-to-door work.

Thanks for all of the responses. Since I'm not going to shipping a lot I decided not to open a parcel pro account. I went registered mail (two day which I didn't realize that offered, but turned into 4 day) and insured up to $8,000. Everything worked out great, besides the two extra days. Still beats the 10-14 I was expecting.
