On early (this one) and very late PNs, the chapter ring was not stepped down from the rest of the dial. Printing errors prompted this change, there was bleed and/or rough edges on early examples. The hard edge of the step made for a crisp color change. As time progressed, so did printing. There is debate whether they were late production or service dials, but non-step dials returned late in the PN era as printing quality had improved so much the step was now unnecessary.

I heard a total different story. 'Non step' is aftermarket or Not original Rolex, or hogh quality immitation.

The price is substantial lower.
