Upto 1980/81 or 6 mil series cases Ori Rolex watch has "REGISTERED DESIGN" engraving.

Err...between the Case Lugs at 12 o'clock...
prior to the period when Rolex Patent n Design...
of the "OYSTER" watch cases expired...

Around early in 6.2 mil case series to the Later Half of 6 mil case series...
Certain numbers of Original Rolex cases...
were even NOT engraved with "REGISTERED DESIGN"...
hence the engraving of "REGISTERED DESIGN" were missing...
between the lugs at 12 o'clock...

EXAMPLES of Original Rolex cases without the engraving of...
"REGISTERED DESIGN"...

6.7 mil case...Pic courtesy of Buddy Jatucka...Roberto.

6.7 mil case...Pics courtesy of Buddy Tomvox1...

6.2 mil case...

6.65 mil case...

THEREAFTER...
from 7.0 mil case series...onwards...
ALL Original Rolex watch cases has "ORIG ROLEX DESIGN" engraving...
between the case lugs at 12 o'clock...

EXAMPLES...(Original Rolex watches are SAFE Always...
when it has the SHORT Middle Stroke of "E" font engraving...)

This pic courtesy of NBTimes...

HOWEVER...
it is a widely known n accepted that...
AFTER around the same time...from 1980 or so...
Rolex issued roughly from 4.3xx,xxx or 4.4xx,xxx mil case series...
until 4,7xx,xxx mil...or perhaps beyond that to 4.9xx,xxx case series...
for RSC Service Replacement cases...

Those RSC Service Replacement cases...
were mostly engraved with the "ORIG ROLEX DESIGN" engraving...
n the corresponding Model Ref# n its case series...
which are easier to spot by Novices n Newbies...

Nevertheless...
the topic has been regularly discussed...
that it is also possible that...
WHEN Rolex ran out of the particular RSC Service Replacement cases...
or under odd circumstances...some time in the early or MID 1990s...
certain Rolex Service Centers elsewhere...
would opt to re-stamp...or re-engrave...
from Blanks...or unmarked WITHOUT watch case series...

Those other ones with the POSSIBLE re-stamped or re-engraved...
Service Replacement cases...
would have to be detected by close visual comparisons...
of the certain differences in engraving fonts...or markings.

Likely examples of re-engraved fonts...
Pointy Sharp TOP "A"...in "STAINLESS STEEL"...
n or...having the appearance of "ORIG ROLEX DESIGN"...
with PRIOR S/Nos. to 7 mil case series...

n Cases that are looking FRESH out of the oven...
or NOS...or LNOS...so to speak...

Humbly yours n,
Best regards
Orchi.

Orchi, where did this info come from:

Can you qualify what the above statement is based on. Is this your opinion? Re-stamping cases is NOT, nor hasn't been, the policy in the USA from my discussions with personnel at the RSC. Maybe you can let us know where this info is coming from that is quoted above. While re-stamping cases in the far east might have been done by some watchmakers, can you provide where and who was re-stamping cases. And lastly, why would anyone be re-stamping cases if the case is not damaged beyond repair?

Thanks Orchi.

Err buddy Springer...
so sorry Orchi missed your post...

It is in Orchi's opinion...though unqualified...
Orchi's opinion may be quoted to RSC USA...
IF necessary...even with the risk of them asking...
"who's Orchi???"...LOL

Back then...many service centers of ADs elsewhere...
for instance were not as regulated...
many of such ADs did maintained Parts Accounts with the relevant RSC there...

Before Rolex assigned the batches of RSC Replacement Cases pre-stamped with Service Replacement Case S/Nos....
n AFTER those pre-assigned batches of cases ran out subsequently...
it was during periods where there were NO fax machines...
nor were there any Online email service...
certain "practices" which may be deemed as irregularities these days...
that in those days were accepted practices...
that certain works needed to be done during those earlier times...
by the ADs n even the RSC...elsewhere...

Words n news traveled endlessly slow those days...
n certain things might have been done n taken cared of on as it was basis...

For example:

IF the damaged watch case owner could produce valid provenance papers to authenticate the watch n its ownership...
at the time...
RSC would re-stamped the early replacement case(from blanks)...
with the original case serial nos...during the required replacement practice...

Then another example would be...
the RSC would engrave the Old S/Nos. of the watch...
(with provenance normally)...inside the backcase cover...
to indicate the replacement case...
was carried out on those that had the pre-assigned Case Ref# n S/Nos...
on the subsequent available batches of Service Replacement cases...
(between 4.3mil to 4.7mil or possibly beyond to 4.9mil cases)...

Each RSC got different batches of the Service Replacement Cases...
for various models...
that were assigned by Rolex pre-stamped with the relevant Case Ref# n S/Nos...
UPON request from the relevant RSC...

Subsequently in modern times...some grey dealers might have to buffed out those...
engravings which may otherwise hurt the value of their stock with Service Replacement cases...
that some were bought as "clearance" stock from retiring ADs...
to be converted into regular watches n sold to unsuspecting buyers...

Nevertheless Orchi also believes...RSC USA n its network of ADs were rather independent...
much on its own from the rest of the world...perhaps.
