just curious are there such requirements for pieces like your 5231G? Or any of the rare handicraft options which would be different to grand complications.

In my country, the 5231G is allocated directly by AD to their customers, after Patek allocates a piece to the AD. Patek is not directly involved in the allocation process to customers. My understanding is this is the same allocation system for all Pateks up to 5204 and Celestial. It also applies to Rare Handcrafts that do not have MR.

However, the allocation process may varies across regions/countries. In some regions, the 5231 is approved by Patek agents for those regions. I may be wrong though.

I saw this in Geneva last December, stunning in the flesh. If I recall correctly, retail was 500-600.

Two of these have come to auction at Phillips in recent months, both hammering between 1-1.2m.

If I was OP, I’d ask for this one. Enamel WT + MR trumps it all.

A kind forum member DM and informed me that the 5303, 5304, 5531, 6002 and 6300 would not be my first MR. On a separate note, my AD also said there are 2 tiers of MR and those in the 2nd tier are not available for customers with no prior MR purchase.

My AD informed me the 5531R was CHF 580k. I'm not sure what's the latest price of the new 5531G but won't surprise me if it is higher than 5531R due to inflation and its desirability.

makes sense I am sure they bumped the price to over $600k for the new G. Thanks for clarifying

Thank you for the helpful insight! Just interesting to learn more about the process and wow MR is definitely at a different level!

Sorry buddy I missed your question. It appears for first time MR buyer, there are not many choices and 5178G is one of those I can apply for. As a guy who loves blue, guilloche and this being a rare handcraft, it certainly ticks all the box for me.

seems like a good choice but also really the only one right now, right ? every other MR seems to have more complications

There are a handful of others also. I'm not sure what's the exact criteria for first MR but most likely I will get the 5178G, unless something convinces me otherwise when I visit the Salon.

5207G, 5208R and 5374G are also available for first time MR buyers. With your collection your AD may be able to make a case for you for 5303R which is not normally available for a first time MR buyer.

The 41mm 5207 is somewhat marginally big for my wrist while the 5208 and 5303 are too big. The 40mm MR like 5178 and 5316 are perfect, but the 5316 is not accessible for me right now.

Of all the listed MR other than the 5178, I like the 5316 the best and then 5303 because patekfreak on IG has been posting it a lot. Looks really cool, especially the movement/ back of the watch looks amazing

Salon in London has also become very unwelcoming. I assume if you are not a Saudi prince they could care less.

really? they were the nicest people ever to me and I was just there for buying a strap and chatting about watches. maybe it's different if you expect allocations from them vs tourist browsing with no demands.

All the best for your MR journey, Michael.

My AD delivered a blue 5539 a few years ago to a lucky customer and I had the pleasure to see it before it was picked up.

The 5316 is a grail. It has a MR, tourbillon and PC in a see-through sapphire dial, housed in a 40mm case with sharp interior angles behind. What a perfect watch.

Hear the cathedral gongs at 33s.

I like the turquoise guilloche dial of the new 5178G but it also represents a departure from the stealthiness of the earlier 5078 and 5178 iterations. If I could wish for another 5178G (plus AD goodwill etc) I'd ask for black enamel with Breguet numerals a la 5539G black. Good luck whichever way you go.

Thank you. I agree the new 5178G is flamboyant and it comes with an additional bright orange strap too

The 5539 black is an elegant, understated and beautiful watch. Also looking at the new 5316, it appears to me Patek is trying to pitch their MR to younger collectors. Maybe a change in strategy?

Too many people with too much money chasing too few watches. I’ve had opportunities on the secondary market, but they’re at double to triple the price.

I have to say it's super cool to see some of these watches posted and truly enjoy reading the conversations had in this section. I know i'll never get into the patek game way too late to the party, but to see some of the super interested watches this group gets is awesome.
