Gmt master ii ceramic lume dims very quickly
Anybody else notice that the lume doesn't last very long on the ceramic gmt?

Yes, quite true........but when you buy such a classy watch, who cares about the lume...........or, hell, even the time??!!

what's the one way you can spot a replica gmt ceramic without opening the back? A friend asked me and I really couldn't give him a straight answer |

Unfortunately, there are some damn good ones out there, good enough to fool many an expert!! Most tell tale and give away signs are in dial printing, font printing on the bezel, length of the hands, etc. Hard to tell without an actual picture............but if you're not sure of the source, don't touch it with a barge pole. I disagree. There are less expensive and more expensive watches that have much better lume. Rolex has no excuse for continuing to have crappy lume.

you should do it this way
leave it out in the room lighting, wearing and go to sleep, then in the middle of the night, check the lume. |

There's several ways to solve a lume problem , you can leve it under a strong lamp overnight and the lume will catch for several days or take it to a repetable jeweler and have them put luminesant paint on the markers , i know we had a thread on this sometime back.
Funny thing my sub always catches a full lume when the lights are turned down or even dim...... |

Rolex lume sucks...but you still have to allow your eyes to adjust to your night vision (rod/cone switch).

I've found that the best LUME you get is when you've just come into a dark room from the bright sunshine outside!! That's when any LUME really glows!!

Not ALL Rolex lume is bad... The DeepSea lume lasts through the night - believe me, with 7 month-old twins, I get up all the dang time at any time of night/early morning. It goes strong!

I don't think anyone can top Omega when it comes to lume. I will miss my SMP for that feature the most. With even a hint of sunlight, that thing glowed like a torch.

Two minutes with my Surefire flashlight and I can tell time all night. Yes, the "glowing" quits after a few minutes but you can still see it in the dark.

I was disappointed by the lume on my Datejust- I thought it was weak just because the watch was 5 years old. Glad to hear it's normal. But you would think Rolex could match the performance of my Timex, which will glow brightly throughout the night. Maybe it's time to go back to the tritium.

No AR on the Cyclops The R of the ROLEXROLEX engraving on the rehaut doesn't line up at the 9 o clock mark. Most fakes also use an incorrect hand stack. Hope this helps. |

I also use my Surefire or Scorpion high-intensity flashlights to charge the lume and on maxi-dial Rolexes I can read them for the duration of the night. Just takes a few seconds with these flashlights.

The best Superluminova has a green tint in daylight, Rolex use a variation which is near pure white in daylight but you pay the price with greatly reduced glow. Omega use the green tinted lume with the best glow and they lay it down thickly, they are about as good as lume gets.
Now, to tell a fake Rolex GMT II (or Explorer II) , first, check the hand stack, the hour hand should be closest to the dial with the 24 hour hand above that, then the minutes and seconds hands. Next, unscrew the crown and pull out one click to the jumping hour position and wind the time backwards, as you pass midnight the date should click back 1 day, only the Rolex 3186 and 3186 movements can do this, no other GMT watch movement (real or fake) is capable of this. Another simple fake detector for the GMT II ceramic is the AR coating on the cyclops, no fakes have this but the jumping hour check is best as it could be a fake watch with a genuine Rolex crystal fitted. |

Try a UV LED flash light. :)
Charges up strontium-aluminate+europium very rapidly and makes it glow brightly while it is exposed to UV. |

AR = Anti Reflective coating.
Rolex does not use this on any of their watch crystals......hence, you can bounce sun-rays off the crystal and blind colleagues at work during lunch breaks!! However, Rolex have used a small dab of AR coating just under the cyclops on their GMT-IIC models. That is the reason why date reading on this model is so easy and you get no overhead light reflections into the date window......something you will not find with other Rolex date models. JJ
