Battle of the Titans Patek 3940J vs. AP 5402

Recently consolidated from 5 down to 3, leaving me with the following:

AP 5402 B Series
Rolex Day Date 18239
Patek 3940J

The DD is my daily, recently took the AP out of the safe and have been wearing it more. Given my current lifestyle my ideal would be 2. Do i consolidate further or just leave as is?

In my book 5402 / 3940J is a much better two watch collection than either 5402 / DD or DD / 3940J and the DD would have to go.

Contemplating a similar move myself also keeping a sports watch and a dress watch and losing the daily / beater in between (in my case keeping 5711 blue and 3998P).

I’d sell the AP and go for a 5164a or the ap and day date and get a Nautilus to go alongside the 3940 :)

I'd leave it as is.

If I had to sell one though, it would be the Patek.

I would unload the DD. The other 2 would be difficult to replace. Also, of the 3, the DD is the only one that will depreciate-unless its a Stella or some other hard to find variant

Other 2 definitely much harder to replace but the DD is an easy daily. May just leave as is for now!

I think I would keep the 3 you have for sometime and revisit later. I like the fact that you have 1 Patek , 1 AP and 1 Rolex,

Personally I would keep the same array of 1 for each brand, and maybe later you can upgrade each individually , meaning a Rolex for a Rolex , Patek for a Patek , etc. So you can switch up without losing the 3 brands .

It seems like it would be hard to daily the 3940 or 5402, given that they are older watches or neo-vintage and are more precious. Given that you daily the DD, there’s no reason to change the collection.

What about a 3940G in White Gold vs Original AP Jumbo 5402?

Would love to see a photo of your 3998P, if you had one you could share? I sold my 3998J to go towards this:

But I really miss the 3998!

Don't have a photo handy but posted one here years ago. I thought about replacing the 3998 with a 3940 some years ago but couldn't get myself to sell the 3998 and I don't have use for both.
