Daytona - Rolex or Zenith movement?

Not sure how to start a poll, but simple answer will suffice as well as reason if you care to explain your response.

I have unfortunately not owned either, but I've seen both and have to admit I like the dial on the Zenith better, but the bracelet better on the Rolex movement version.

Obviously the Zenith is no longer made and it older so it must be more collectible.

Like you, I prefer the dial (only white though) of the Zenith version but the bracelet on the non-Zenith.

If forced to choose, I'd go with the non-Zenith black dial. The difference in looks with the Zenith isn't that great, it feels heavier and more substantial, it sits better on my wrist because of the superior bracelet and it's also my understanding that it's cheaper to service.

Also, collectibility means very little to me...

This may not please the ears of Rolex purists , but you can fit a modern bracelet on a 165XX case if you like .

I don't think I've seen a Zenith Daytona but my in house version is growing on me the longer I have it and wear it.

Rolex.

New to the watch scene but I was attracted to the fact it was an in house movement so bought that. I intend to keep it so future resale/collectability is of no interest to me.

Movement-wise, the 4130 hands down. Dial-wise...tougher choice, but I'd prob go Zenith-based Daytona

Yeah. I prefer the layout of the Zenith, but the 4130 would be my pick movement wise.

Many prefer the sub dials aligned with the 3 and 9. Some think the median Daytona - with its raised sub dials - looks crowded.

For the same money, I'd pick the newer version of a Rolex model. Rolex is pretty conservative about making changes (in the case of the bracelets, just plain "late to the party"), and those changes are usually worth having. I still expect a Rolex to last more than one lifetime, so I consider pre-owned to be great values. My 50's and 60's DJ's still work fine without the improvements of the last 50 years.

As to collectibility, Rolex makes so many of each model and for so long that predicting collectibility is a sucker's bet for models as recent at Zenith Daytona's. I'm hoping to pick up a Daytona in a few months and will be looking at the Zenith Daytona, but the reason will be about saving a few $'s on the somewhat older versions.

I like the improvements on the newer Daytona and the in house movement. New Daytona for me.

When I was getting my Daytona (white) I decided on the Rolex movement over the Zenith mainly due to three reasons: 1). the Zenith does not have seconds hacking (where the seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown), thus making it very hard to accurately set the time, 2). the Rolex has two days power reserve vs. three days power reserve for the Rolex movement, and 3) the Rolex movement has the much better easylink expansion bracelet.

sorry correction on point 2 above: it should have said "the Zenith only has two days power reserve vs. three days power reserve for the Rolex movement"

Zenith.
In the case of the black dial, the Zenith has the cream rings around the sub-dials. I prefer this over the modern dial which is a brighter white.

And you can always change the bracelet or clasp if you are not happy.

Prefer Rolex movement but definitely prefer the Zenith dial (when talking about white). If it's a black dial you're after, buy the best deal as the difference between the two is hardly noticeable.

Rolex 4130 for me!

When I bought mine I had the choice of the Zenith or Rolex mvmts....choose Rolex as in the long run, I think it will be a better movement.

Although, if/when I purchase a white dial, it will be a Zenith as I like the sub-dials better than the new 4130....it will also include the modern Daytona bracelet!

The 4130 is supeiior the the 4030 movement. Not my opinion but that of top watch makers. I do like the looks, color of sub dials and over all appearance of the Zenith daytonas much more though.
