Is any automatic watch really a good bang for the buck in this day and age when all of us carry Smartphones that are synced with the atomic clock and a watch is simply jewelry instead of a tool? Yes, Yes I know we will all need automatic watches when the next Zombie Apocalypse starts

Tudor BB or Speedy Pro. That's a tough one. I have the BB, and feel I have no need of a Speedy Pro, as iconic as it is. A very worthy and historic model, though.

Very subjective. The Speedy has great heritage, a proven movement, classic, timeless and functional. Lots of bang for the buck! Best? Again that's subjective. Many say it's a must if you are a collector. Not sure I agree. I've owned a few over the years but none have managed to stick around long.

I will say that a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with a hesalite crystal and solid caseback will be my next purchase, but I don't think it's the best watch for the money. Maybe an Explorer 114270 or one of the Black Bays, as others have already stated, represent the best bang for your buck?

I will agree that the Speedmaster Professional (moon watch) is a lot of watch for the money.
I don't know why I haven't bought one yet. There's a lot of history there, besides being a good, legible chronograph.

I only paid $275 for my Moonwatch in the 70s. Still looks great, so I would say it is the best watch for the money; even at today's prices.

Yes the Speedy Pro is a LOT of watch for the $ and I love mine, that said I have to agree with another poster, a used Sea Master, specifically a 2254.50 at <$2k has my vote - great watch. Mine is about 12 yrs old, never serviced, keeps perfect time - better than my Rolexes.

imop, its a fine watch that draws many fans, but the best bang for the buck around $3k used....? as a past owner, no way unless you absolutely love the aesthetics of it. i won't even mention the alternative(s) without my flamesuit on. |

Sticking to the Question as asked: Best? I don't know about "The Best" but it would have to be on a shortlist. Rolex-owning mate has one and it is a very nice watch. The Automatic Seamaster also.

I would argue that a Speedy is extremely hard to beat for the money. It is a true icon with a fantastic heritage. You can also put a Speedy in any collection (even those full of PP, AP, VC, etc.) and it won't look out of place at all. Indeed, I get as much pleasure out of wearing my Speedy as I do wearing my Patek AC.
