NYC January

Hi All,

Off to NYC in January, this will be my 4th time so i've done the usual sights etc...

So, thinking what can i do that is not the normal touristy stuff? Bearing in mind it's likely to be freezing i'm after some ideas from the locals please!?

Any and all ideas welcome, watch viewing (perhaps not shopping this time) is already on the list!

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

Central Park (not after dark), Madison Square Garden to see my beloved Knicks, Katz's Deli for the greatest Pastrami sandwich in the world, Greenwich Village (East and West sides) for a liitle freaky feel, all of the museums (I recommend the MOMA and the Museum of Natural History myself) The NYPD and FDNY museums, the NYPD museum is located near the South street seaport and is really well done, a ride on the subway, the Staten Island ferry, (freebie) the Empire State building observatory, Time Square after dark, Chinatown/Little Italy for some great eats, (in Chinatown beware the street hawkers selling "genuine" Rolex on the corner, needless to say they are all FAKES) a walk on the Brooklyn promenade for some great views of Manhattan, a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, pizza at Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn bridge, (Bklyn side) a visit to the diamond district on East 47th street (Not on Saturday, most stores are closed for religious observances).

I could go on and on being a lifelong NY'er, and could do NYC on a dime. There is so much offered for free, but most tourist do not know about any of it.

Enjoy "my" town and have a wonderful visit!

Agree on the above. Also, the Intrepid. You can venture outside of Manhattan, too. Brooklyn and the other boroughs, West Point. There are so many great restaurants in NY, you could do a whole trip about eating/drinking.

I went last January for my 40th. We stayed at the St Regis on points and since it was so slow we got a nice upgrade. It was during the major blizzard they had which was a unique experience.

One of my favorite things we did was have High Tea and the Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle. One of my favorite views in NYC.

We also went to some Imrov comedy shows that were great.

Another hotel idea is the Residence Inn just north of Times Square. It's the tallest hote in North America and has breathtaking views of Central Park.

I don't know if they've reopened but if they're not concerned about the presence of rats and the diseases they carry. I wouldn't trust anything else in there is clean.

Having been there I saw nothing that I would describe as clean.

Sleep no more.

It's a live immersive theatre production and is easily one of the coolest things I have ever done. It's at the mckittrick hotel and essentially you pay 100 bucks a head and then walk around a four story hotel watching live actors play out a very loose interpretation of Macbeth. You need comfy shoes and they have delicious cocktails beforehand so get there early and relax in the prohibition era speakeasy beforehand.

It's truly an amazing experience. Not for kids as there's adult content. Not for those who have mobility issues as you will be walking up and down flights of stairs chasing actors to see how the story unfolds.

Sounds a bit strange but take my word for it and do it if you can. You'll need to look for tickets ASAP.

Avoid Trump Tower at all cost. People seem to protest there all the time blocking traffic, creating gridlock for firetrucks and ambulances.....

Its not just the protestors, it's the security. 56th street is shut down from 6th ave and the two left lanes on 5th between 56th/57th are shut down. Shopping Tiffanys is a pain but going to Gucci is impossible

I've heard good things about Sleep No More, as Tom suggested. Even if you're not strongly interested in Shakespeare, it sounds like something worth visiting once

Thanks very much to everybody who took the time to respond to this request.

I've done a good chunk of the suggestions already as I love the city and have been a few times now but there are some that are new to me so i'll be sure to try to fit them in.

Arrive this Wednesday for 6 nights - can't wait!

Don't forget The Frick Museum !!!!
It's the preserved mansion of a steel magnate from the turn of the century.
His personal collection of art is astounding

Try Benito's in Little Italy.
I also like to go for pizza in Brooklyn and walk the Brooklyn Bridge back over into Manhattan.
