Loctite question

Dear TRF: please don't laugh (ok, maybe I deserve it). I will be adjusting a couple of my wife's bracelets and find that I still have Loctite. However, the tube is probably 3-4 years old. Question: does Loctite expire?

Sourcing 222 here is only available in industrial quantities, and to be honest I find it useless to spend $30/40 us for something I need 3-4 drops of. Comments?

As always, Thank You!

Loctite has a shelf life of 1 year after the date indicated on the label.

If you're not a prime client, shame on you.

You'll be fine, but get this one instead for next time:

I've never heard of a use by date and have been using loctite on engine rebuilds for years. Never a problem or a loose nut or bolt ;)
You'll be fine with what you have. Remember to only put the thread locker only in the female part. Don't put loctite on the actual screw.

242 is too strong for tiny threads.
222 is the correct locker

Looks like Vanessa recommends a bit stronger stuff, and even cheaper.

I've used this with success...let me know where "here" is and I have no problem ordering and shipping to your address for you

https://smile.amazon.com/Loctite-386...C+6-milliliter

EDIT: FWIW, turns out I ordered it over a year and a half ago myself. Just used it couple of weeks ago, and the screw seems to be firmly seated when I tested it.

There is nothing wrong with using blue or even red to lock threads on the tiny screws. The problems will occur if and when you wish to remove the screw. Blue is stronger than purple 222 and you run the risk of twisting the screw on removal. Red if done correctly will require heat and even then, on such a small screw will possibly end up twisted or even broken screws.
There are 2 types of each and the first of each colour require proper thread cleaning to work correctly. The second type can be used regardless.

When using thread lock make sure that you only put locker in the bracelet thread(female) part.
If you loctite the screw the risk is that excess loctite will secure it to the center link and when dry the movement of the link will rotate the screw in the thread.

Thank you. Mexico. That is exactly what I bought last time at a hardware store in the US. Here, smallest bottle is 50ml, $30-35us

If the 6ml tube has lasted years, a 50ml container...well, I could buy 200 watches

Hey G,

Are you sure you want to listen to Vanessa?

After all she's not an auto mechanic and probably not rebuilding that many engines.

The Rolex kit given to ADs includes 221; but it is a nightmare to find!

221 as far as i'm aware is the same as 222 but requires the cleaning of threads to be secured

Same for me. I'm sure loctite gives the 1 year shelf life recommendation to cover themselves in case of failures.

i've used the nail polish lacquer finish (clear) with its brush applicator on a few link screws in the past and it worked very well.. it also dries in seconds instead of the loc tite 12 - 24hrs.

no color to deal with and the brush applicator is helpful. it was easier that the blue loc tite i used on my THC which was a bit droopy when i didn't shake it well.

So fake news can even wikileak into TRF
I think for link screws I'd listen to the CW21 watchmaker...

No, he was right. It's just not that big of a deal to me to go with a loctite that a tiny bit stronger... Especially if it's that much cheaper. Just don't use the red Loctite

200 watches. You're going to be busy at this years GTG!!!

You should be ok with old Loctite. It may not work as good as fresh material, but will work.
