Is there a difference ?

Good evening,

Is there any difference (or difference without a distinction) for going after market, grey, non AD for a recently discontinued model (all black GMT with green hand) as opposed to paying inflated prices for watches in production but hard to get at retail?

I have a modest collection, not a flipper and just interested in the collecting aspect of the hobby.

thank you

I'm not sure what you're asking.

If you're buying an in production watch from an authorized dealer, you should be paying MSRP.

If you're buying a discontinued watch from a gray dealer you'll probably be paying higher than whatever the MSRP of it's in production counterpart.

The price difference between the two depends entirely on if you want to pay a premium for skipping a line and don't mind having a pre-owned/older model watch.

Aftermarket usually means using non Rolex parts in the watch which is frowned upon by most Rolex purists. You can do whatever you want to your watch. Purchasing an out of production watch can be done by going grey or going to an AD the sells preowned. The most important thing when buying a watch outside of an AD, is to buy the seller first. If something feels off, it usually is. Good luck and happy hunting.

I’m not sure I grasped your question. The discontinued black bezel GMT isn’t anywhere near as expensive as a blue/black or red/blue variant. The supply of these watches is much higher, since they were sold in abundance, yet even though discontinued, don’t command a high price. They’re still usually over retail though.

Finally, since they’re no longer available new, the comparison price of used or grey is a mute point.

I suppose my question is more directed towards rationalizing a purchase of a discontinued model vs buying into the hype of chasing a hot model that is hard to get at AD without jumping through hoops. Money is money but I am asking from a philosophical standpoint.

Hmm well your philosophy is a little askew then. Discontinued usually means even more expensive than the grey price while it was still in production. 9 out of 10 times that rules applies. However, you’re in luck, since it doesn’t apply to the exact variant you’re interested in. The older black bezel GMT hasn’t boarded the hype train (yet) so you’ll get one a lot cheaper (comparatively speaking) than a batman or pepsi

The GMT II of which you speak, a 116710LN, has been discontinued for a few years, can be had for anywhere from $13,000 to $14,000 depending on age and condition, versus an original MSRP of $8,500 or so. The only real difference is the black bezel, although the current models are decidedly more distinctive.

And the phrase is ‘a distinction without a difference’…
