1985 Datejust Questions

I'm new to Rolex Forums, very excited to see all of your knowledge and enthusiasm for your watches. A bit about me: I have a '96 SS Datejust (Slate Tapitry face)and a '99 Explorer II (White), both since new. Wife has a SS Datejust with a diamond face. I come from a family that all wears Rolex, and have always appreciated their style and durability.

My question: I have an opportunity ot buy a 1985 Datejust two tone (always wanted one), but do not know of that vintage. Were they still making them with acrylic crystals? Any other tidbits of info are always appreciated.

Love the site and look forward to being a part of your great community..

Is it a concern for value?? Both of my watches have the sapphire crystals.

Also- I have an Arctos Nato and a Tag Heuer 1000, both great watches, the Arctos is a really special watch, biggest thing I own, but cool...

Yes, 1985 will have an acrylic crystal and 3035 movement. I have a 16030 from 1987 on my wrist as I type this. I love it! Regarding value, it depends on the buyer. Some like the vintage acrylic crystal, some want the newer sapphire. Older DJs will not command as high a price as a newer one. I would say if you already have a sapphire model, go for the vintage model with acrylic!

What is the model numer of the one you are looking to buy? Does it have box and papers, recent service? Then we can help with ballpark price range.

It comes with the box, papers, tag and original receipt from 1986. It was serviced 3 years ago and the band has minimal sag. Black dial with gold hands and gold fluted bezel. I feel it is a clean unit, and has the quick set movement. The owner wants $1700 for it, I am not in love with the black face, wanted a gold face, but it seems to be represented fairly and the owner has answered all my questions very well.

I would offer $1500, although $1700 is not unreasonable, provided 100% authentic. Is this over the internet or an in-person deal?

$1,700 with all the related boxes and papers sounds like a great price!

Its over the internet. I did speak with the owner on the phone and got the story of the watch and my questions answered. It may not be the watch of my dreams (black face), but I am seeing alot of ones of this vintage, and I am still learning about the different models and years.. I do want a watch that has a legit history if I buy used, too many weird things out there. It is a fascinating world..
Funny thing- my grandfather sold his early '80's datejust two tone for $900 years back, it is the exact watch I am looking for... He sold it because he could no longer read it, he got a Timex with a big display in its place, he was in his early 90's..

1985 dj

Here's my 1985 Datejust. Just picked it up for under $1500 and it was just serviced. Make sure the bracelet is in good shape. I traded mine and added some cash to get a newer one with less stretch.

Yeah I felt good about the pruchase but I messed up and traded the correct endlinks with the old bracelet. So when I received the newer Jubilee the new endlinks were for a non-lug hole model. $150 for a set of 455 endlinks and I was back in business. I love the watch though!

Yeah, $1500 should get you an acrylic 80s TT.

Bingo! That guy with a leather band and I'm sold.. Love the jubilee, just already have one.. We'll see what this guy does, I am in no hurry, I already know what time it is..

Actually, love the gold tapistry face, I have a slate tapistry Datejust, and have never gotten sick of it- it changes color in different places.

Just saw this post and I happen to be wearing a 1985 two-tone Datejust with the tapestry dial. The crystal is acrylic and I am certain of that since I had mine replaced a while back. A further question is there any way to get kthe lume back? I supspect I could send it in and have new hands put on with superluminova but I am not sure if that is even an option. I wore this watch 24/7 until the lume went South and I moved on to other watches.
