What a beautiful watch and great review. This is my first post, having recently found this forum. Really love the discussions and reviews, finding them most helpful and entertaining simultaneously. Love my 10 yr old Air King, and perhaps will purchase an Explorer as my next.

That was going to be my first Rolex...
... until I saw the 16610LV "V" series.
But now that the 39mm is coming on Sep/Oct '10, I'm gonna get it now! Sometimes you just feel the need of something different, something special. Thank you and for a great, to the point, honest review! |

This is a great review. I have been wanting an Explorer and like the size of the original. It is a classic, uncluttered dial and very understated. The pics of the new version on Rolex's website make it a very tempting choice. My local AD is going to call me when it comes in. I have a small wrist, so the 36mm is a great size for me (though my ND Sub is not weighing me down), but I really like the look of 2010 model.

The Rolex Explorer I is a well made watch. I have worn the same one everyday since 1981. This was in the field, not in an office.I had it Serviced when needed. I still keeps perfect time.

I love my explorer too! Does anyone know if the indicator surrounds on this 114270 are white gold?

I agree the Explorer I is a classy understated watch. I use to breeze over it in the show case being attracted to the flashy bezels, gold, etc., but one day it struck to try it on and I was impressed with the beauty in the simplicity & elegance of the design.
Noteworthy is that THIS is the watch (1954 Model) that Ian Fleming wore on his wrist during the writing of the James Bond Novels (featured in a Watch Time magazine article last year), so that makes it even more special and perhaps the true "Bond" watch. The 36mm is a little small for my big paws, but I may get the new 39mm when it's available. May you enjoy it for many years! Cheers! |

Nice review. I love mine. Tried the 39mm one on in Argentina and found it too big for my tastes (although all watches are going bigger so maybe it makes sense). I hope they continue to make it in 36mm though.

I love the 39mm explorer but I wish rolex would have made the hands bigger.

Thanks for the review. I'm going to buy an Explorer next month, Jan 2011, and I'm having a real problem deciding betwee the Explorer and the Explorer II.
Might come down to the fact that I've never been very happy with a watch that doesn't have a date. #4 |

This perfectly sums up my reasoning about this watch. So I acquired a second hand Explorer 1 on Monday. |
