My SS GMT was a 21st birthday present to myself - many, many years ago. It's the only Rolex I've ever owned.

Bought a Sea Dweller 3 years ago at 36.
I told my wife it was the only watch I ever would need. (my Dad has had a TT DJ for 20 years) It should last a lifetime and she was OK with the purchase then. Then bought her a Oyster Perpetual w/18K white gold bezel this fall for her b-day. Then AD puts me on his Daytona list and now I have another one at 39. Where does the madness end? Now I am thinking GMT Pepsi?????? |

Actually got my first Rolex a week ago just before the price increase. Went shopping for watches with my fiance in Hawaii. It was between a Bentley edition Breitling and a TT GMT IIc. She liked the GMT better and got it for me as a gift. Now looking to get her one...hmmmm.

Got my first Airking at 12
I apologize as this is kind of a repeat of what I put in my new member post but it fits this topic. I took a s/s Air-King on trade from a gentleman that couldn't read the dial, against a Seiko with a white dial. It was in 1972 and I had an after school job at a jewelry store that my dad was managing. I paid him $18 for the watch although I had to bend the rules as I was only really allowed to give a maximum of 20% of the value of the new watch he was buying towards the sale of the new watch which was about $80.00. Anyway … I thru in the extra 2 bucks to make it work and he was so overwhelmed by my generosity he took the deal and I bought the watch. I felt very fortunate at the time and I was the only 12 year old on the school bus wearing a Rolex.

I was 20 when I purchased my Tudor Chrono Monte Carlo in 1983 with virtually all of my summer holiday earnings. My first real Rolex, a black face EXP2 was puchased at 32.

My first Rolex was a new TT DJ mid size purchased in 1986. I was 26 at the time. Right at $2,000 US from the AD. Wore it every day and night except while it was being serviced or traveling out side the USA until I got the YM SS/PT mid size this past week.
The TT DJ has seen a lot of rough use. Lots of backpacking and over 10,000 rounds of .45 LC while participating in Cowboy Action Shooting. It has held up very well and never failed me. |

Almost bought a GMT when I was twenty. The Post Exchange was selling them for $140. Many of the officers wore them. I bought the $96 Omega Seamaster Chronograph instead. I really liked the four color dial and passed over the "moon watch" that was also available. It was the movement that had been to the moon & that swayed me. My Rolex came a bit later in 1981 at the age of twenty-nine. It is a two tone Date Just model 16013.

My parents gave me a Sub for my 21st B'day. that was 33 years ago. Turns out it was a Red Sub. Who knew? It's still my one and only Rolex. Wonder what it'll be worth in another 30 years??

My First Rolex
I was 20 in 1987 and purchased a GMT stainless for $1010 from a AD that gave financing. Came up with a story for my parents that I got it throught a friend of a friend for a "deal". Then the payment book arrived at the house and they freaked! My father had a 1985 Air King he got in the Bahamas for $400 or so and this was plain outrageous! I worked double shifts at lawnservice and paid it off in a month before heading back to college. Still have it and my Dad's AK after he passed away. Ironically, this evening I just purchased a 18kt President DD as a delayed 40th birthday present to myself. I just have to tell my wife I got it through a friend of a friend...

My first was an SS DateJust in 1991 at the age of 27. It was a 36mm case and kept horrible time. I had to sell it to pay for legal fees when a house purchase went bad. I lost money on it too - but had to sell it quick.
I'm a lot happier with my Sub!
