Nice Rolex! How much did it cost?
Well, I've had mine for almost 48 hours, and have not really showed it to anyone. I am wearing it, but just not trying to attract attention to it. Even so, a few people have noticed it. All but one (the cashier at the grocery store) have followed this formula almost verbatim:
Q: Is that a Rolex? A: Yes. Q: Is it real? A: Yes. Q: Wow! How much was it? A: I just tell them "it cost enough" and try to drop it. Has anyone else dealt with this. Personally, I think it is none of anyone's business what it cost, if they really want to know they can find out for themself. |

You handled it the right way IMHO. I NEVER tell strangers how much I paid for my watch. I've even refused to tell a few people I know quite well.

I've never been asked by a stranger about any of my watches.
Perhaps I don't look approachable.

Actually, I should interject that everyone exepct the cashier is an aquantaince of some sort, not a total stranger. But I still don't feel its any of their business, and honestly, I find it awfully rude when they ask.

"I don't remember, it was a long time ago."
"It was a gift." "It's a fake." Are my responses. |

I've thought aboput just telling people that it's a fake. I definatly would say it was if a stranger on the street asked me about it.

When I was a photographer I was taking a families pictures, and I must admit that I asked a guy if his Yachtmaster was real.
He let me see it. I felt supremely embarrassed when I asked if it was real. I was just proud of myself that I spotted it. I feel embarrassed to this day though, and I will never ask again. You and that man handled the nosy questions very well. And hey, at least I didn't ask how much it cost!!! |

Yes, the people I work with are really annoying when it comes to seeing what someone else has. I just act as though I'm wearing a $9.95 Casio.

I've never had a stranger ask. WIth my colleagues, we chat at coffee breaks and lunch, and we all have expensive hobbies. Paul has $40,00 tied up in his 40 Ford street rod now, Mike is going to have to put $6,000 into his 4 time record holder Chevelle drag car to make it a street driver again, Russell is going to have to pony up a whack of money to have the engine rebuilt in his airplane (his 4th plane), and Al's wearing his TT Rolex today. We all know what everybody else's hobby costs.

I usually jsut say I have no idea, it was a gift. That shuts them up and also allows me an out. And then they think that I am nto that rich.
If I am really feeling snotty amongst friends, I reply "If you have to ask, you do not have enough!" |

Its funny- when I decided to get finally finally get my Rolex last month, I had assumed I would get a Sub. In the end, it was a Datejust that just caught my eye. It is the new style, with black face, arabic numberals (all vertical) and the white gold fluted bezel. It is simply gorgeous and timeless in my mind- and does not scream Rolex.
But seriously, no one seems to notice! It could be that where I work there are enough high end watches that a Rolex does not generate excitement. Its just funny- I wanted a low key Rolex- and I got it! I did show it to a couple of close friends and family. When asked how much, I basically said I got it used (3 months used!) and "you don't want to know". |

I went out last night to a work-related dinner (wife's work so everyone's a stranger to me), and sat opposite an interesting Croatian guy. In two weeks since getting my Sub, he is the first person to notice mine and he did it in an interesting way. He said "You are first person in Townsville I see with Oyster Perpetual." I said "Yes, it's new." He said "I have one. Made in '76 and I bought it in '78, but mine's real." Now THAT approach is a real ice-breaker.
