5146j question

Hey guys usually I’m not on this end of the board as Patek was more than I was willing to spend. As of late though Patek has been popping up more and more on my radar. A very good friend of mine has offered me a 5146j, box and papers. The watch is in great condition, price on it would be 41k CAD. Is this a fair price and is it considered highly desirable?

The 5146 is a classic; some people love it, while others find it too traditional. I wouldn’t say it’s highly desirable, but there’s always going to be a market for it: it’s a classic Patek annual calendar at the end of the day. You’re getting a pretty good deal for it, so you should seriously consider it if you like the watch.

Hi fenrira thank you for replying. I do like the watch as I tend to lean towards simple dials. I’m not a flipper so buying the watch for higher resale down the road is not really my driving force. That said though if I ever wanted to dump the watch I also don’t want to take beating if I opt to sell it.

In my perception 5146J is no highly desirable piece and I doubt it will become a well-loved classic such as 3940.

If you want to get an idea for the floor you could use the lower end of the asking prices on chrono24 and deduct 25% or 30% for discount and dealer margin. You could also call a few dealers - the outcome may not be pretty.

It's discontinued isn't it which has to count for something?

$41k CAD is ~ $33k USD. Price vary considerably depending on condition and age of the watch. A well taken care of watch that only had one owner is going to have more value than a watch that has been through multiple owners and had a lot of polishing that has taken a lot off the case. For price comparison, you can look up chrono24 to see what other watches are listed for sale.

Otherwise the 5146 is a classic Patek AC and there are numerous threads here about owners sharing their experience with the watch. It has been recently discontinued, so it may be harder to find new and so pricing will goes up after discontinuation.

Ultimately if you like the watch and you feel the pricing is reasonable, that is the most important factor for you. A lot of people here focus solely on how much one will gain or lose or resale and that really detracts from the joy of ownership. If you are a flipper or reseller or investor, I can understand the focus on resale value. However for watch owners who want to enjoy the watch for a long time, I think it is best to not go overboard on value retention or price appreciation.

I have owned for 5146G for 8 years and it is still a great watch. I purchased it new from an AD and have not worried if market price is going up or down on this watch.

$30k-$31k (usd) for excellent condition with box and papers would be fair for both sides.

Not a "good" deal at that price IMO. His sell price to a dealer would probably be 20-25% less. Maybe split the difference? And factor in a service if the watch is more than, say, 3 years old.

LOVE 5146J. A piece of elegance. I have it. I only wore it a couple of hours as soon as I bought it just to get a feel of it. Now in the safety deposit box and miss seeing it.

His offer seems reasonable given you have seen the watch and trust your friend, and assuming he is the first owner and not worn the watch much. If he has many watches, hard to get longer than a month per year wrist time on each watch.

Personally for only one Patek, I'd go with 5205 or 5396 any metal but 5146 is elegant and humble.

Thank you all for your replies. At the current price and what you guys are saying it would appear that the watch is about 3-4K over what the market value is. The watch has had one owner and may require a service. I would need to ask and confirm. I do like the watch quite a bit, so let’s see what happens

Its a very lovely piece but prices are soft and demand is low, this shouldn't affect your decision if you love the watch, its a very classic Patek piece with a complication they are known for. One thing I wanted to add is take into consideration your buying from a friend and you know the origins and history of the watch, even better if it was well kept and taken care of. That to me, is an important variable as I like to know the history of a pre-owned watch, especially for high horology.

5146 is a great watch, I have the WG version and love it.
The asking price seems fair, it is almost the same asking price of a black dial Daytona….which is crazy for me but that is where the market is

Great watch, recently discontinued, no reason it won’t hold/increase value, quintessential patek, price is in the sweet spot and you know the history! Most importantly, you like it. Go for it! I’ll never let mine go, gets better with age.

Your friend's price is fair. If you like it go ahead and buy it. You won't likely lose any or much value. Frankly more upside potential than downside in my unbiased opinion. Good luck.

I really do like the watch and there may even be a bit of wiggle room if I were to ask. I’m curious, do any of you recall what Msrp was on this piece from the AD

When you say latest models; is there dial and colour variations?

I never got a straight answer on that myself. I bought mine (5146G grey dial) a few weeks ago new from an AD and they had other variations available. I'm aware of a couple of other dealers offering the grey dial one but the more i read about it after purchase, the more i felt maybe the last production date was 2020.

I reckon each variation has its own end date. I doubt any of them go for 47K in 2021. If they do, that would be a real good deal - gorgeous annual calendar, power reserve, fancy buckle, etc. etc.

It is a beautiful watch, and your friend would receive a little more than half that amount if he sold to a dealer. You can call dealers yourself asking them what they would offer for one to check. I would try to negotiate with him for a fairer price after checking with dealers.
