probably JLC boutique can't afford to have a full time in house technician

unlike Rolex, they have a service centre and qualified Tech

For me it's yes. Had a Master Control and flipped it. Recently acquired a ultra thin date since I had to have one in my collection.

One of my favorite JLC's is the Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea with the American dial. It is a cool and funky watch, limited edition to 359 pieces but the reason it is not in my collection is the price, and that is where somehow JLC gets it wrong IMO. The MSRP of that is piece is $12,100. For a watch with a movement that they have in regular production, on a rather poor leather strap, it just doesn't add up for me personally. I was even offered it up discounted from AD at $9,000 but still, at least for me that was is fun and funky, but not a must have, especially at that price. If "street price" was perhaps $5-6K for that piece, I'd pick one up.

The Reverso is a must have in my collection. Likely will be my next piece.

I have a GMT reverso which I wear once a month as a dress watch. It is an interesting brand but if I buy a relatively expensive dress watch, I would like to see a nicely decorated movement. For ex: I like their ultra thin perpetual, but when you look at the case back, you see a quite industrial, no decoration movement.

Having said that I find the duometre line interesting.

if there is a must have JLC it must be the Reverso
BY FAR the most iconic model

NO watch for me is a must have, you need to get what you really want and will wear, not something you think is a must have for a good collection, a good collection is watches you love and enjoy wearing, period...

They are 4th on my "favorite brand" list, but I really don't wear dress watches. If circumstances change, I would certainly add a Reverso or MUT Moon 39 to the collection.

No such thing as a must have, watches should be a passion, you have to love the watch.

I love the Reverso, as most have already mentioned, but Cartier does a great rectangular watch, I think the Memovox, at least from JLCs entry priced models is quite compelling, great design and a very interesting and useful complication.

You can get a vintage Memovox for about $1,500, and a current model for about as much as many simple Reversp models.

You will need a very large watch box if you go down the track of must haves.
JLC is a very well respected brand for good reason. They were great value for money till the recent circa 20% price hike.

They make sense in the 5-10k range but anything over your going to ALS/Patek/AP range and they can't match the finishing of those brands.

Can't go wrong with a 5-6k Reverso or Master

For me a JLC is not necessary! The have some nice options but none that speak to me for the status of my current collection.

Definitely not must haves in my book, though the Duometre line is really cool and might become keepers, but no intention to get one so won't know, as for the rest of their models can't say they move me a lot...

For me? Yes. Eventually a Reverso or MUT Moon will be part of the collection. The new Reverso Duoface Automatic is giving me pause as I want to see that one in person before buying new or pre-owned.

Agreed; there was a time when I thought that the complications they offer for the money made them a must-have, but I found that they just weren't my style and never seemed to get worn. I don't have any JLCs at the moment, and I really don't miss them.

Unfortunately, Richemont's insidious influence — with their attendant pointless limited editions and cheaply-drawn half-baked designs — has made each year's watches less and less appealing to me. Although their vintage pieces can be brilliant, and the simple Reverso is still a great watch, it's just not compelling enough to deal with the evil empire. :)

Also, Hodinkee's shilling for the Geophysic hurts their credibility; it's so obviously drawn by an amateur dabbling with an office computer that I can't believe anyone takes it seriously. And that's just the basic version — the world timer is a complete disaster.

I doubt any of them would have been acceptable back when they had skilled craftsmen instead of bean counters running the show. :P

My only love for JLC is a Reverso.
Have had several JLCs over the years with their base models. My experience with them is that their movements are designed for dressy watches. Watch usually needs service every three years or so when I wear them regularly. One of mine had to be sent in 4 times to fix a problem. Instead of making hundreds of movements I think I would rather have them make fewer but more robust movements. So the answer to OP's question is no.

Here is my one and only:
