Even if the OP really is interested in watches as a hobby (I know most people get into hobbies by saving six figures and immediately speculating on trading-up, right?) this is frankly a terrible time to do so. I'm new to the watch world myself, and I'm only a low-level collector, and at least once a week I say out loud, "damn, I should have started this seven years ago." And not because I'd be able to flip my 2015 Submariner in 2022, but because I would have been able to buy a Submariner at retail, period. Or because I could have gotten an NOS Speedmaster for less than six grand.

Getting into the luxury watch game to make money in 2022 is like showing up at a party as everyone else is putting on their coats to go home.

A watch (Rolex , AP, Patek), like Realestate or a classic car are an asset. They hold a value and prestige. The name Rolex is huge and I think paying the right price is very important whether holding, flipping or trading. Just important info that I think everyone wants to talk about.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE ARE GETTING A GOOD / FAIR DEAL? No different then me going to buy a car. I can plug in the VIN into KBB or carmax and get a value. Anything like this for watches?

Let me suggest moving on from watch flipping, abhorred by members here and looking into something like selling refurbished VCR’s. About as necessary as wearing a high end wrist watch.

The decent deals are the 28 and 31mm Datejusts. 2 tone, diamonds, colorful dials, etc, all a big plus. Trust me, 200k of Lady Datejusts will get you where you want to be.

If you have $200k to invest, why watches?

If it’s a hobby, great, we can help you learn how to collect in a fiscally responsible way. Waaay different than “investing.”

If it’s an investment, it’s really not a good one as it’s fraught with risks, challenges, etc, but ok.

The advice I’d give is that you need to choose. If it’s an investment, it’s not a hobby, and vice versa.

Your challenge here OP is you asked a group of people who are truly passionate about Rolex and horology in general for advice on how to move them as commodities. That’s like asking Carol Baskin for tips on how to best start buying and selling Tigers for profit and expecting a helpful answer.

I was under the impression if you buy something directly from an AD and resell or trade (AP, Rolex, Patek) you’re barred from getting anything else. You have to wait a minimum of 2 years.

With that being said… what’s reccomended? Where do I start?
For all of you who trade.. how do you feel you’re getting a good deal and where are you getting the “market value”?
