Light Pollution Image From NASA: The USA At Night
So when did a Chicago-sized development pop up in northwestern North Dakota? When the Bakken Oil Field was discovered. ND is now the nation's second leading oil producing state. The arrow points to the lights of oil rigs and flares from space. (This same area was dark in the 2003 photos from NASA.)

I was wondering why Winnipeg was so bright in the photo, Joey, when I first saw it. Then I realized I was way off. Amazing.

Very cool photo. Hard to miss Las Vegas, and is every light on Long Island turned on?

It will be interesting to see how the dark sections become lit in years to come.

If you look at the red vs blue voting districts from the recent unpleasantness, it's almost the same image.

Just read an interesting article in People magazine about the oil camps in ND. Reminded me of dorm life in college.

Cool picture - interesting that you can basically draw a straight line down the middle of the country where the lights "stop." Can't wait to get out to the southwest in a month for a wedding to see the stars at night as they should look. I have to drive probably 2 hours west or 4 hours north to get away from the light pollution :(
