FFWD a year and a 1/2 and the store that he didn’t own would re release shoes in the sizes we and other accounts never got.... and of course at 5X retail. Don’t get me wrong early on Nike said we as an account could mark up over MSRP if we wanted to help keep the shop open since nothing else in the world of skate/snow was selling because of unpopularity and USD parity
That was the big step away point from me. Once Nike went full corporate with SBs and channeled them through all their retailers my interest was out. I actually miss lining up outside the skate shop sitting around 5 hours before a release so I could be first in line to get a new drop, and usually a new board or wheels or some other swag to go along as well. Really took the allure of the brand away from me. I feel bad for all the local skate shops who got hoed in the deal as well

Shoes failing apart is definitely an issue. I do gravitate toward AJ1s more due to this since midsole is not like what they have for AJ2 to 10 which crumbles.

I think it also depends on how it’s worn over time. If you wear a pair say once every other week it should hold up better than something that rarely gets worn when it’s like 10-15 years after release. A friend has 06 DMP Jordan 6s that he wears like once a week and is still holding up. Meanwhile mine crumbled when I took them to India a few years ago.

Absolutely!!! I have a limited pair of Chris Paul AF25’s that actually comes with a tag on them from Nike that states if you use these shoes for their actual purpose they will fail. How insane is that?

Yah super dirty although Burton did it to us in the winter as well. In fact Nike didn’t want us to even sell Burton and would threaten to pull our account. This was before Nike SB tried its hand at Snow

One of my favorite ads was when Etnies made an ad about how their new double stitched design would last 12 hours of skateboarding when my buddies and I pretty much did that in a week. Our immediate impression was “these shoes are sh!te”

I eventually did get a full leather limited edition pair that retailed for $165 for $60 and it was the comfiest skate shoe I ever had. Lasted more than a week 😂 but I’ll never forget that AD and how it had the complete opposite effect on me

It’s everywhere now, biking is no different I’m finding out. Kinda sad it’s about who spends the most on advertising now versus who’s putting out the best product. And I’m sure it was probably going on when I was younger and I wasn’t aware at the time. But there has been multiple points in every collecting hobby where I realize that you really have to weed through a lot of BS to truely find out what gives you the best product for your money now a days.

I am a huge Nike fan, but their SNKRS App is terrible.

Funny story, back in early 1987 I went with a buddy to a local chain shoe store called "Shoe Station." He was looking for a cheap pair of athletic shoes to use on a trip he was taking. The store always had a huge table in the front with unwanted shoes they were trying to sell. These shoes weren't even in their original boxes, but were just piled up with the laces tied together. He bought a pair for $19.99+tax and I teased him relentlessly about how ugly they were and that nobody wanted them.

Believe it or not, they were the original red-and-black Air Jordans that are worth a small fortune now. It just goes to show how fashion tastes change!

I am certain they do not care one single bit. They will occasionally pretend to care and discipline someone here and there to keep the people and press thinking they do care.

As you said.. Business is booming and the free publicity is amazing.

Hahaha too funny because when we got Nikes into the store kids didn’t want to touch them because they were too corporate. They all bought Savier shoes by Brad Staba but was actually partially owned by Nike. I digress. It was funny hearing kids say Nike isn’t a skate shoe , if you want to skate buy a skate shoe. I had to laugh to myself and then tell them Nike was a skate shoes before there were skate shoes. I remember buying Jordan’s to skate in because of the air sole and the construction. They were all over the magazines with pros wearing them before skate specific shoe companies started to show up on the scene. The most ridiculous had to be how many people skate Original canvas Converse Chuck T’s All Stars. Mind you Ollie’ing was just starting to happen .... the destroyer of shoes.

It’s the same thing as Levi jeans ripping in crotch after 6-9 months in even though the only thing you do is wear them and jeans are by definition supposed to be super resistant.

Last year I won a pair of Nike Ben & Jerries. Did not like them and was surprised about the market value. Can‘t imagine somebody walking around now with that sort of money on his feet.

Is it? Nike actually put a tag saying if you use these shoes as “shoes” they will fall apart. I feel that’s quite different than a product just failing. IMO
