My son Billy's first 'own money watch'.
My family & I've had a pretty dismal 2012 so far & it's not going to get better any time soon to be honest (among other many other traumas & a death in the family, my Father In Law... who's genuinely onea life's Good Guys.... a guy who's never had much but always provided for his family & never did wrong by anyone & who is just a genuine, dependable, honest & just a thoroughly decent man...... has been diagnosed with very advanced & inoperable/terminal bowel cancer).....
But nevertheless 'Life goes on' as they say & my thirteen year old son has been saving up his wages to buy his first 'own money' watch (ie: that he bought himself).... & I could not be more proud of him. He jumps in the truck with me when I leave for work at 0550 every morning.... in all kindsa weather no matter how cold or wet or windy it is & however tired he is he does his paper-round without fail.... seven days a week & never takes a day off (unless he's booked it with his Boss).... & he always does the 'no-shows' rounds too & he budgets & he forecasts & he researches & he saves & today was the day he wanted to buy his first 'own money watch'. I can honestly say that it's been the very best day either of us has had so far this year, & I am just so very happy & deeply grateful that even with all the sad'n the bad stuff going on lately we still got to enjoy onea those 'memory-days' together y'know? So my friends this thread isn't a 'sympathy seeker' nor is it about the doom'n the gloom'n the bad stuff we all endure. It's about the good & the young & the future & 'memory-days' we all hope to enjoy & to share with our kids.... & it's about my youngest son Billy's very first 'own money watch'.... His G-Shock GW3000B-1AER.

Great post Dan and congratulations to Billy. The G-Shock is an excellent choice.
Sounds like Billy has a bright and successful future ahead of him.

I'm sure your son will turn out to be a credit to you, Dan.
The best we can hope for is that we replace ourselves with decent people. Just make sure you keep the collection spick and span for him.

Billy's a good kid & he's genuinely bright. I just hope he doesn't go "off the rails" when he's older like his Dad did! Quote:

I hope 2012 turns a good corner for you soon. You sound like a good Dad. I hope my 9 month old boy and I end up having what looks to be a relationship ala what you have with your two lads. Nice G-Shock! |

Dan - as a father I have to say I got the chills reading this (the good kind). These moments are so special and no doubt he will remember it the rest of his life. A very great moment, indeed.
Keep hanging in there, my friend. It's been a remarkably difficult time for quite a few of us the last several years. But sharing and experiencing these moments really helps bring some happiness to the world. |

Dan, I'm sorry to hear of your FIL's health issues and my thoughts are with you and your family. A big congrats to your son's hard earned reward for the work and job well done. He is learning about responsibility and accountability for his work ethic and buying a new watch is a noble accomplishment. I too really like Casio G-Shocks and they are a great watch. I wish your family the best and spending quality time with your son is priceless?......

Hey Dan..... Life can be a real drag sometimes but I can see you pulling your family through it all with that reassuring Spuds grin and bravado
As for Billy, he's an absolute credit to you That work ethic you have quite clearly instilled in him will serve him well throughout his life...... and despite those crack of dawn starts, knowing the true value of money is probably the most important thing one can learn in life. As a kid and teenager, I did all the paper rounds, stacking supermarket shelves, gardening, odd jobs and cleaning cars for neighbours and the independence and feeling of self worth is a lesson never forgotten. Also very cool he chose to spend his hard earned on a watch..... |
