Stainless or Ceramic Diver - if you could only have one!

Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a predicament and would appreciate your thoughts!

I've managed to save for an AP and tried on a stainless diver a few weeks back - fell in love.

They didn't have a ceramic version in stock but it has really caught my eye on the forums recently; I actually think it's an even better looking watch. I see that the majority of people on here seem to agree, from the results of a recent poll.

Whilst my bank accont may be able to stretch to the ceramic, I'm certainly not going to be able to afford both anytime soon. Whilst my heart is telling me to go for the ceramic, my head is telling me that the stainless will be more 'versatile' - by that I mean I think it would look OK both casual and relatively formal (don't know about the rubber band but with a steel bracelet). I can't see the ceramic ever looking good with a suit and I can imagine it being purely more of a weekend watch.

My question would be: even if you prefer the ceramic, would you go for the stainless if you could only pick one?

My only other watch is a Rolex BLNR by the way.

Thanks in advance.

I have a steel ROO and i agree it is probably more versatile than a black watch, which the ceramic effectively is. However i am looking at doing the trade for a ceramic as dealing with the scratches on a SS RO/ROO/diver just gets painful after a while.
In addition fpr you it looks like your heart is set on a ceramic one. If you do not not get it i have a feeling you will just trade the steel one for it down the line which will cost you more.
So i would go ceramic and use the BLNR during the week.

Would you get tired of the orange accents on the ceramic? If not, get the ceramic, tho the prices for the ceramics don't jive with me.

i would live in fear of breaking the case ,,, ive no idea why , or how tough they are in real life ,,, or the threads getting stripped ,
that aside i do like the look , and there have been some great pics of late.

I'm personally a stainless kind of guy. Maybe ceramic if I had a large collection though.

Replacing a ceramic case isn't really that difficult or expensive, compared to the price tag of the whole watch, or compared to for example the price of replacing a steel Offshore bezel or a steel bracelet.

I'd pick ceramic BTW

I have owned the steel diver and the Forged Carbon diver. It took about two weeks for my steel diver to show signs of mishaps on the bezel. On the other hand the FC diver showed none. I do like the Ceramic. However the difference in price buys a lot of watch refinishes on the steel diver.

What do you want? Looks or practicality? If it's looks, I think the SS Diver wins with the sharp black and white contrasts and finely brushed and polished surfaces, but not by a huge margin though bec the Ceramic Diver is also beautiful ( AP has a knack for finishing ceramic like no other brands can ). If in terms of practicality, the Ceramic Diver wins, for being lighter and virtually scratch proof, which holds a lot of appeal. It can be expected that even after extensive wear, a C-Diver will still looks brand new. The SS Diver is a chip/scratch magnet and it will start to look a bit "off" after a while.

I think there is this misconception that ceramic watches are fragile like glass so if you drop it or knock it accidentally, it's going to crack or shatters. Not really true, depend on how much force of course. An impact large enough to crack a ceramic case is going to damage the watch movement of a steel watch anyway. Bottom line, never drop your watches.

I am biased as I have a SS Diver. Personally I am not fan of black watches. I say SS

Steel, I like the black/silver interplay more than the solid black ceramic.

I vote ceramic...

...mainly because you already have a steel watch.

The ceramic Diver and your BLNR will make a great pair, with a greater contrast than if you went with a steel Diver. That said, you have to consider if you will grow tired of the orange on the ceramic Diver. Instead of my FC chrono, I was going to get an FC Diver, but was a bit hesitant about how I would like the yellow hand long-term.

Here's my ROO FC chrono with my wife's Sub, which I wear occasionally...

Bezel...

As brought up by other posters, another consideration is that the bezel of the steel Diver will show scuffs, scratches, and dings easily, especially compared with a ceramic bezel.

I have a GMT and the bezel still looks great.
I had a Panerai 275 and the shy bezel showed every minor mark.
If such blemishes will bother you, the ceramic Diver would be the better choice.

But the steel Diver does look awesome, and I love the hands, which aren't as appreciable with the black and orange paint on the ceramic Diver hands.

Thanks for the input guys! Definitely a lot of love for the Ceramic. I must admit I'm still a little undecided though!

Tough call considering the pricing. SS looks better IMHO but you have to deal with wear and tear.
