Panerai 422

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a 422, but I am not an expert on this particular model.

As a watch lover, a know a little bit about a lot of watches but I can certainly use some additional information on this one.

It's a pre-owned example, in outstanding shape. It looks new. Both OEM straps are brand new and they have never been used, the previous owner used the watch on a custom strap.

It has triple boxes, paperwork from AD dated 11-2012, the brown leather and black rubber strap, plus the tool.









I've always had an itch for Panerai but I was never willing to spend big bucks on a watch with a Unitas movement. This one, being in house, ticks the right boxes. Plus I think it's gorgeous. It was pretty much love at first sight, even though it looks ridiculous on my puny wrist.



Any advice or anything I should know about this? Reliability? Desirability?
Will I get killed if I want to unload it down the road?

Service costs?

I believe the price is right, actually below anything I've seen on chrono 24 or watch recon. It was a trade in and I am five times customer this year alone at the place that has it for sale so he is giving me a good price.

Hi Chip,

I recently looked at one for private sale in Oz. It was an 'O' series.

The 3001 IH movement is a workhorse but he wanted $9600.AU

I bought my RG 231 for less that that LNIB.

Couldn't pull the trigger.

The other issue is we have no Panerai distributor in my City but I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem where you are.

It's a nice model and that one looks in good nick.

Nice watch. I had one for 6 months months and ended flipping. Should be able to get one for around $7800. Filled the void later with a 372 which I like for its simplicity. Enjoy.

fit looks great! buying pre-owned should minimize any "flip tax".

the 422 is often compared with the 372. 422 is a great choice if you want more action on the dial (versus a base PAM with two hands), plus the crystal is saphire instead of plexi (if that might be an issue for you) and the PR in the back is a nice bonus. of course, joearch's photo above shows a strong argument for the 372. either way, you can't lose.

It's a great reference. It has all the classic Panerai accents and comes with two excellent OEM straps. I am just getting into Panerai myself. I am no expert but I'd say go for it. Don't worry, I flipped an Explorer for mine!

Love my 422 on the Panerai rubber strap.Big advantage over the 372 is that it has a crystal.More of a workhorse compared to the 372 just by having a crystal and not plexi.

Congrats! I absolutely love my 422. Check out assolutamente (sp?) strap in 26x26mm though. The only thing I didn't like about the 422 was the 26x22mm straps it came with. Not beefy enough for the watch. Enjoy it.
