1964 Datejust 1601 Underline Dial, Radium or Tritium?
So I just picked up this watch today and this is the research ive done so far and the uniqueness of this Datejust 1601, If you have anything to add on this i would love to hear... Thanks...
Under where it says OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED there is a line and i was told that was added there for a very short time and was also put on Submariner,GMT and daytonas indicating that its no longer radium but tritium and before they wrote T on each side of SWISS the underline meant Tritium? Or is it somthing else? 1.Original Acrylic Glass 2.Unpolished case and Unpolished sharp fluted bezel 3.Alpha hands with Radium or Tritium??? 4.Pie pan dial with underline and Radium or Tritium plots??? 5.Says only SWISS at the 6 Oclock 6.1560 NON hacking movement and non quicket 7. backplate says 1601 and all the normal stuff and 1/64 guess indication 1st quarter of 1964 and the serial number falls into 1964... |

General consensus is around 1960 that Rolex lowered the amount of Radium and by 1964 yours will almost certainly have Tritium.
“1963 – 1964, “Transitional” underline of which Rolex switched from Radium to Trtium, delivered dials are “swiss” signed but laminated with tritium.”[/QUOTE] I was just confirmed that the underline at the time before they wrote T SWISS T on the dials only said SWISS so they put the UNDERLINE to specify its tritium... Very rare indeed and happy |

We’re around, though you seem to be answering your own questions
As for (your) first two points, they both imply the watch has never been serviced – are there any markings to indicate otherwise inside the back case ? |

Lots of vintage Datejust fans & an interesting dial. I’m not qualified to answer but I’m sure others will chime in

Yes the watchmaker serviced the movement and gave me a 1 year warranty... Been wearing for a few days now and wow within 2 seconds keeping time... When I bought the watch it did have some writing on the back of the case but don't know what it says....

Congrats on a nice looking DJ.
How did you conclude the midcase wasn’t polished? It appears to have been polished from your pictures. The 1 o’clock lug seems rounded a good deal - more so than its 11 o’clock mate.

The watchmaker that sold me the watch said it was his fathers watch since brand new. That he barely wore it and it sat in the drawer most of its life and it was never polished.. From what I see all logs look equal to me, sometimes pics don't do justice.. But then again im no pro... |
