What do you think of Cartier?

How would you rate Cartier on a scale of quality an craftsmanship from 1 to 10? 1 being a mickey mouse watch that you win at an arcade, a 5 being a Rolex, and 10 being some super exotic Patek?

I would rank Cartier as a 9, but personally I would move Rolex up on the scale from 5 to about the same ranking as the Cartier.

Here is my Tank - vintage circa 1982.

Cartier is no Mickey Mouse, that's for sure. They are fine timepieces, with very reasonable prices. The two tone Santos is my all time favorite watch.

cartier is too dressy for a youth like me, IMHO, but at the same time I must confess its too serious and 'grownup' a name for me too...I mean even with sporty models, a cartier is a cartier, a very serious, beautiful and historic watch brand...very elegant

I agree with you Asad, Cartier is too dressy for me as well, I don't have enough use for a pure dress watch so I haven't looked into Cartier at all, but I've heard great things about the quality and craftsmanship

does that mean you want us to point out equally dressy brands to give an idea of what we mean by too dressy or you want me to point out some watches by Cartier to explain what I mean by too dressy?

anyway, what I mean by too dressy is two things:

1. they have never had a diver as far as I know, now that is dressy man :) hehe..no this point is just to give my general feeling that they are themselves more dress oriented...though they have Roadster, Santos and 21 but even most models from these lines can pass for dress occassions...the name of cartier will make a watch fit for dress occassions, IMHO, just my perception of the name :D

2. not just that they make more dress watches, they are so historic, it wouldn't even suit them much any other way...its like this great, stylish name that has its image as a truly sober brand, in my mind.

so given the above two things, I said they are dressy...but I must re-iterate, they are a lovely brand with great history and very pretty watches, especially the Tank Americaine, Santos 100 and the Roadster is excellent too

...and as if they heard me, they just came out with this killer from their already one of my favourite Santos 100 line

First off, I would move Rolex up to 7:th or perhaps 8:th. Secondly, following my customized ranking system, I would put Cartier at 6 or 7.

Thanks for the replies,

This is a 10...

And this would be a 9...

Where do you think these two would be?

(Do you think that this Cartier would look good with a nice pair of blue jeans, and a white button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up?)

Cartier makes a fine watch. I wore a Tank Francais for about 6 years (bought it when I turned 21 as my first fine watch) and never had a problem with it. I'm a sucker for roman dials so that is reason enough why I'm so attracted to them. My mom recently purchased a 42mm stainless Ballon Bleu and it is gorgeous!

Love Cartiers!

The only problem I have is that everytime I save up for a Santos, I end up buying a Rolex instead.

Sorry, Asad......while they may be well crafted, their aesthetics leave much to be desired.

Whilst I am not a fan of their designs and their use of generic movements, the casework is excellent and the customer service is beyond reproach.

The 1, 5 and 10 scale is a bit silly though.

Not that I'm a Kennedy fan (far from it), but I believe that Jackie gave JFK a Cartier tank as a wedding gift. A Cartier tank is truly a classic piece.

Here's the link to the video. The banana part is about 2/3 through.
