Movement Noise Question

I've got a question. Why does my Z Series Sub-Date's movement make different noises while I have it pressed up against my ear--it's not a constant sound, every once in a while it changes its tune. I don't know much of anything about the technical inner workings of a watch, but is this normal? Why does it do this? I would think it would only sound different when the hands move/ or date skips

How hard are you pressing it to your ear.

Tenderly?
Firmly?
Really firmly?
Hard?
Really hard?

Can you describe the noise in more detail?

Is it a tapping sound?

Bearing Noise?

Injector pulse?

After deep consideration and consultation with my mentors I have narrowed this down to............................tinnitus.

Tinnitus:- Perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some it takes the form of a high pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets" or "locusts", tunes, songs, or beeping.[3] It has also been described as a "whooshing" sound, as of wind or waves.[4]

Wikipedia et al.

How about it chris, does any of this 'ring a bell'?

If the noise is a tick-tick-tick, synchronized with the jumping of the second hand as it rotates, J.J. will tell you it's a normal operating characteristic. After all, his TT Sub does it.

And now down to serious business:

Actually, I have noticed SOME change in sound when I held my SD or Sub Date against my ear. There is a "continous high pitch ringing with the subtone tick-tick". Sometimes, the sound differs a bit. I guess it's due to the sound being reversed from the steel.

Not sure which sound you are describing specifically, but an automatic watch does have a lot of moving parts: the rotor, the gears which drive the mechanisms for moving the hands and date, etc.

My co-workers all think I'm nuts now... Well, more of a conformation to most of them.

I spent the past several minutes with my watch up to my ear to see if I could hear any different tone in the watch. My 'clicks' sound rather uniform, however they do echo more than I thought they would.

Guess soon at the water cooler they'll be talking about me ...

Seriously Chris, my Sub does the exact same thing. It has for 6-1/2 yrs now. Every time I've put it up to my ear it does the same thing. It's nothing to be concerned with.

It all them little swiss elves inside of the watch keeping busy turning gears!

Chris,

My Roelx watches sound the same. Just the inner mechanical workings doing their things! One of the reasons I like mechanical watches!
