Measurement of Rolex cases

Can anyone tell me how you measure the size of a case? For example, a 40mm Sub - is it measured across the case (9 o'clock to 3 o'clock) minus the crown guards?

I only ask because my Tag is meant to be 39mm but doesn't quite measure up. I would like to know where Rolex measure from as I'm planning to get either a 36mm or the new 39mm Explorer. Trying to visualise what the 39mm will look like size-wise. Thanks.
