You're welcome, buddy.

Also bear in mind that the 3186 has been improved quite a bit over the older 3185 calibre.

It's not just the Blue Parachrome spring, but also changes in gears, etc., in fact quite a few modifications, hence the new calibre no. from Rolex.

This 3186 was incorporated only in the GMT-IIC, but later models of the GMT-II (16710) do have this same movement as also the newer Exp-IIs.

I specifically asked for this and made sure I got it when I ordered the new V-series Exp-II.

I bought a 1996 'T' serial white dial Explorer II from a member here, its been on my wrist for 2 days now and has not lost or gained a single second.
This is my first Rolex but not my first automatic watch and I am just astinished that a mechanical watch can have quartz type accuracy.

Here's one of the pictures from the original sales thread, clearly the watch is not mint but its in fairly good condition for 13 years of use and as my new daily beater it'll get a few more marks and dings before it ever goes for a service to be restored to 'as new'. At least I won't feel the need to cry when it gets its first big scratch on my wrist.

This is a great forum guys and thanks to JJ for the review, I found it very useful before making my selection (but where have most of the pictures gone?).

Nice review JJ! Unfortunately, I am just not into the Exp II as most appear to be. I find it plain, boring, and not very attractive. Of all Rollies, it is among my least favorite. But, if people love them, more power to them! I respect individualism!

Just purchased my 1st Rolex and becasue of this thread it lead me towards the Exp II w/White instead of the Sub Date. I received it today and just sized it. I'm now trying to get used to the sharpness of the bracelet. I can get a pinky between the clasp and back of wrist but it still bites in a bit when typing on the computer keyboard. I'm used to Omega bracelets :). If i adjust the comfort pin one more notch bigger the bracelet is just too big. I'm hoping my wrist gets used to things quickly :).

The current layout is six links at 12 and five links at 6.

Question: In which hole is the micropin inside the clasp?

What you can do is add on one more link to the '12' side giving you a new arrangement of 7+5 and then make some adjustments inside the clasp for a perfect fit.

In any event, don't have more than 5 links on the 6 o'clock side.

Let me know.

JJ

Thanks JJ, the pin on the clasp is currently positioned in the center slot. I have 5 visable. so it's the 3rd postion in from the buckle. I have 2 more positions left.

Any thoughts? Maybe 7 + 5 and then the last clasp pin slot?

Good idea!! A 7+5 arrangement will give you a better centralization of the clasp on your wrist.

Try the above and see how it goes...........then let me know.

My personal arrangement is 8+5 (all 13 links) with the spring bar in the 4th hole from the end - perfect fit - see pics below......

JJ, I have an 8 at 12 and 4 at 6 and it is quite loose, you reckon a 7+5? Three pin slots left.

I have quite girly wrists!

8+4 seems pretty cockeyed to me. Try 7+5 and then you should be fine.

Just make sure the clasp sits in the centre as in my picture above.

White dial. Tried it on at a couple of ADs here in London, and its versatility (suit or casual) makes a white dial the ideal choice.

I have found the culprit: English weather. The cold wind makes my arteries shrink, and my wrist thinner = my watch moves all over the place!

As soon as I heat up it's all good.

Bring on Singapore and Sydney in two weeks!

Again, I would like to thank the initiator of this thread. I am a newbie on Rolex and I had a difficulty narrowing down my options. I started off with DJ, then a Platy YM, then a non-Rolex (the Cartier Tank Francaise), then back to Rolex with the GMT IIc... Finally, with the help of this thread and with a thorough comparison at the AD, I have finally made my choice on my very first Rolex: a new EXP II black dial.

The shipment arrives on Tuesday. I can hardly wait :(

JJ, I believe this is your 3rd Exp 2. Can I ask why you sold the other 2. Apologies if you've already been asked.

BTW love it....

Well, the first one I discovered a large gash through the coronet on the dial when I brought it home, so I rushed back to the AD and they sent it off to Melbourne for a full dial replacement.

In this part of the world, once you buy a watch and your name and date are endorsed on the warranty card, you cannot return it.

Anyway, a full month later the watch comes back, but with the wrong dial - had just SWISS at the bottom instead of SWISS MADE. So back it goes for another bloody month!! All this totally pissed me off and I sold it just a few months later.

Second white dial Exp-II I traded it in with my LV for my current Pt. YM.

A black dial Exp-II which I had, I sold off earlier for a TT Blue YM.

This one has the 3186 movement and I don't think I'm going to make the same mistake again.

JJ
