OK, let me clarify. I normally wear a 40 regular, my waist is 32 inches. I'm looking at a wool bomber jacket that's sized S-M-L-XL, I'm thinking the M is my best bet. It's unfortunate that the nearest retailer is about 30 miles away, so I can't go try one on. What makes me hesitate is that I've read their fit is pretty loose in the abdomen, but sizing down to fit there means sleeves that are too short.

I'm thinking of just taking a leap online and sending it back if it doesn't fit.

From my experience, their fit is usually roomy/comfortable, but true. The Double Mack I just picked up is a size 44 and its perfect in the sleeves and shoulders with room to layer a bit.

The Tin Field Jacket is a size L, and it fits well, but could be a bit roomier in the shoulders especially with a layer or two under it.

I would say stick with a Medium and you'll be fine. You would probably be swimming in a size L.

I've got a hat and hunting vest made from that material. IMO it's "old school" in a good way (unlike lugholes ).

Holds up very well - my gear is ~15 years old.

I have a pair of Filson chaps I use for upland bird hunting. I have had them for 29 years and their still going strong

I wound up buying the Filson Duwamish bomber jacket in size M. It is almost large for me, there is plenty of width and length for a heavy sweater underneath. But it's not overly large over just a tight base layer, so I think it will be fine. They say it's a size 38-40, but I would say more like 40-42.

Anyway, it's pretty much what I was looking for and I look forward to putting some quality miles on it.
