Magnum PI Watch
Hi all,
I've tried to find out the "official" watch (GMT??) that Tom Selleck wore as Magnum P.I. in the interest of finding one. Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with the various GMT offerings, especially in that timeframe, and vintage type watches in particular. I really like the new GMT II, but something about the older version with the pepsi bezel calls. Some of the things I seem to get conflicting information on are like the quickset date, acrylic crystal, SELs, etc. Sorry if this is readily available and I missed it, but all the focus is on the new GMT (and believe me, it IS a gorgeous watch). Thanks in advance for your help! |

In the mean time, SEL stands for Solid End Link, something that was introduced in 2000 I think so the model you are looking for will not have SEL. Acrylic Crystal was used prior to Zaphire Crysatal on wacthes 70's and prior I think. Any way here is a pic of a new GMT enjoy!

Ok I found some infor about those GMT's
It seems that 1980-83 the Base GMT had an acrylic Crystal. Here is a link to a GMT page: http://www.doubleredseadweller.com/gmt_transition.htm Hope it helps!!!

The boy in that photo looks to be about 6 or 7? I think Magnum (the character) was 34 in 1979. So he supposedly inherited the watch in 1952 or so, long before it was introduced. So, considering the innacuracy of the storyline, I would suggest you get yourself an early 1675. He also had a Chronosport, another hard watch to find these days.

Here's another discussion verifying that Magnum's father died in the Korea conflict:

Ok here is a nother link!
The watch has crown guards so first Crown guards came out in 1959, still innacturate for Magnums age, I do not think he was 26 or 29 years old whe it started? http://www.doubleredseadweller.com/gmt.htm

Based only in the photos, I would say it is either a late 1675 (has large GMT arrow and large indices) or much more likely an early 16570 with the matte tritium dial and enlongated coronet.
Look here: http://watchesinmovies.info/displayi...album=80&pos=1 and compare with the first photo here: http://www.doubleredseadweller.com/gmt_transition.htm

Wow, thanks for the quick replies (gotta love TRF), including the storyline and history of the character info. Definitely got a ton of good information to build off of.
I've heard the 1675 model number referenced, but just wasn't sure if that was, as David said, the early 'transition' model. At any rate, it seems the 1675 may be the ticket, and historical questions aside, I like the look of it. Also, would some of the references also have the proper bracelet, end links, etc associated with it? Now the question remains....where do I get one (cheap)????? :-) Thanks again-great stuff!! |

You will have to start looking arround on shops that specialize on Vintage Rolex, talk to old timers and see if they want to sell their old watches! A good place to start is talk to some of your local Jewelry stores and AD's they usually know who is selling what where. Let them know you are looking for a Vintage watch! It will come to you, the most important part you need to certify that the watch is what you whant! Original, good condition, serviced preferably. No Crystal changed, if the watch has the original Acrylic in good condition it is more valuable that a new no acrylic so do not be tempted to chage it becasue it will "look better" Good Luck!!!

I have had a great stroll down TV memory lane with this thread. Some web surfing found some great sites. This one here references the 16570:
http://magnum-mania.com/Characters/Main_Characters.html And while the show started in '79 (pilot?), I think, he didn't start wearing the Rolex until season 4 or so, which gives further credibility to the ACTUAL watch being a 16570.

I really liked Magnum, too. I was going to add some of the background that I could remember (like it was his dad's watch) but everyone else got there first. LOL.

I still watch the show from time to time and usually he is wearing something on a black leather strap (although I have seen the GMT as well). I always figured it to be late 60's vintage Seiko, like my '68 Navigator Timer. A lot of the guys from Vietnam brought Seiko back home with them.

Talk about bringing it back from the dead....This is a 5 year old thread. I loved that show. No wonder why I like Rolex, I was brain washed as a kid. I even owned a 308 at one time before I went to 911's.
Tom Selleck is a class act and I share a lot of his values. |

I'm keeping a lookout for when he starts wearing the GMT on a bracelet. I seem to remember him floating in the water treading water and thinking about his Dad and flashing back to doing a funeral salute a la JFK Jr. with the big watch on his little wrist. |

The watch is a 1675. Both in Magnum PI and Jesse Stone.
If you follow the story line in Magnum it would have to be a very early model likely with a bakelite bezel. |
