I wholeheartedly agree. But let's not kid ourselves, this is a social media site. In fact, it's the grandfather of the modern social media site some here detest.

And I'm fine and happy leaving it as-is.

But when new members the forum will need in the years ahead start asking for some modern features, its always best to test test test and at least say we tried, then revert back if its a flop.

I don't think we should be afraid of things we can easily reverse.

I'm a longtime member of a photography forum and a few years ago they instituted a "like" feature and it completely changed the feeling and interaction of the site. Now some members are just posting as many random shots as possible to get their "likes" up. There is even a listing of all the top "liked" members and it's obvious many see it as a competition.

The site has degenerated into mostly just posting your photos in theme threads with people especially "liking" posts of other people who "like" their stuff and back and forth it goes. Some people obviously enjoy this type of interaction and I think this scenario lends itself to a photo oriented site more so than some others but overall I'm a NO on the "like" button.

That would suck and I'd be totally against that too.

But this isn't what this site is about and you can format the system to not 'reward' anything if you choose too.

I also suspect the photog site has people plugging their own businesses or selling their images so there's a gaming opportunity there which the admins are clearly aware of. They might even have advertisers.

I do think what played out at the photog site is a bit of an unusual case and wouldn't necessarily be all that applicable to this forum. I probably shouldn't have put my "NO" in all-caps because I really don't feel that strongly about it. I think I was letting my thoughts about it at the other site come through more than anything.

I do think there can be a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" element
when it comes to "likes" and it can become somewhat cliquish but I will say I am also a relatively new member of a vehicle oriented forum that has "likes" and "thanks" and I would say it is more closely related to TRF and I don't see them as being any sort of disruption to the forum, although that forum has so many other problems maybe I'm just missing it.

Agree gentleman.
I think people are getting lazier by the day and also this new generation seems to love attention and awards. Next after the like button, they’ll be requesting a like counter so they can feel popular and cool. Let’s leave that high school behavior to the high schoolers.

This childish behavior is exactly what I’m referring to. I’ve seen the same in the BMW forum I frequent. One of the reasons I’ve stopped visiting those sites and prefer the way TRF manages the site.

A high post count only means you are popular with yourself... it is actually the exact opposite of what the FaceTubers are after.

What is best a custom Rolex or a Rolex that is stuck in custom?

Buy a professional camera and you´re a professional
photographer, buy a flute and you own a flute.
