Rolex service problem! Help!
Heya guys.
I have ss sub rolex with plexiglass. When I bought it. I was told that the dial was replaced by rolex. Because thats what they used to do. I bought this watch a few years ago. This week. I took the watch into rolex to get serviced. I was told that the although the watch has all genuine parts. The dial is not the original dial and with no service papers.... they cannot determine that the watch is an original and not made up of parts from different watches. I went to the original sellers and told them my situation. The owner told me that rolex used to sell spare parts and they sold them the parts. (Is this true?) The watch is genuine and if I have a problem I should take him to court and get my money back. (I think he was a lil flustered because he thinks I'm calling him a liar) I should also note that on the receipt he wrote that he guarantees that the watch is 100% rolex. Now I love this watch.. But I really have two concerns.. Is my watch made from spare parts? How will I give this to my son one day if they wont be able to service it? What should I do? Is this just rolex being a pain or have I probably been scammed by the seller? The seller has been around for years and specialises in selling rolexes. |

Did you take the watch to Melbourne or Sydney?
I find it strange to think that either RSC cannot determine that a service replacement dial has been installed. There are plenty of watches with service replacement parts and no papers. It should not be a problem if it is a genuine dial and correct for the reference/serial number. What model sub was it? Can you pm me the seller's name? This all seems quite strange. |

What model ref no is the watch? and what dial does it have in it?
A photo would be good. The seller is from what I have heard a reputable dealer, however I have no experience with him. I cannot understand why Rolex is refusing to service the watch based on what you have said, i.e. Rolex replaced the dial. So, who am I??? |

Rolex is saying that because I have had the dial replaced by a non rolex service center.. (I am not sure if this is true but apparently Rolex service centres leave marks on the back of the watch) They cannot determine if my watch is infact original. Even if all the parts are genuine.
Apparently people make watches from parts from several watches. |

If all parts are genuine, I am still surprised that they will not work on the watch. I have had subs serviced by Rolex that had previously been worked on by others. I would push it further with Rolex. But as I keep asking it depends upon which dial is fitted to which reference no??? If its obviously incorrect even though genuine then you still can have Rolex service the watch if you have them replace the incorrect parts with correct parts. I am sure they will do that, it will cost you a new dial but probably worthwhile in the long run. |

They said that if I had done it a year ago... It would have been no problem. But recently Rolex Geneva has put a crackdown on vintage watches with no service history.
Here is a link to the photo. http://www.movingpixels.com.au/?page_id=160 |

I would have replaced whatever to make it compliant. Believe me. All I wanted was to get it serviced. If they had said you need to replace the dial. Done.

No Rob, I have not heard of that. I had a 5513 serviced by Sydney RSC in June 2009, no service history was presented with the watch and it was no problem.
The image is not good, either 14060 or 5513, is the depth rating 200 or 300 meters? Do you know the serial number? |

generally i have found the RSC in melbourne to be very helpful, and michael in particular.
something isn't really adding up, I suspect there is a strong reason why they feel this watch has been 'assembled' or 'altered'... and not in a good way. Even with Geneva's sometimes draconian policies, if it is something as simple as non Rolex part etc they usually agree to work on a piece if it is rectified as part of that work... service parts fitted really shouldn't be an issue. It is a bit hard for us to guess at what could be wrong... wrong movement in wrong case, altered case numbers, non date dial put into a date model watch...etc etc .. but i guess if they smell something that feels like someone has really been up to no good then they'd just wash their hands of it... i'd get it looked at by an independent watchmaker and see what they say. whats the model number and serial number from between the lugs .. and as michael says above does that dial read 200m or 300m ... |

Please dont get me wrong. Michael at rolex was very helpful. I did ask him straight out. Is it fake. He said no. From what he could see... All genuine parts. I said so the only reason why I cant get it serviced is because the dial has been replaced with no service markings. No service markings means you cant determine if the watch is original. He said yes. He said it was a recent measure taken by rolex to stop Faux vintage watches.
The watch says 200m. I asked if Rolex geneva would know. Can I send it there. He said yes. But only by hand. =( |

on the dial it says 660ft=200m.
I am not sure about the 5513. The number just looks familiar. I will check when I get home. Its on the report. Ignore the 5513 for now. |

Well with that depth rating/dial it should be a 5513. On your paperwork should also be a serial number, can you post that too.

Interesting to say the least...!
I would go with Jedly's sound advice before proceeding any further...Preferably with a independent who specializes in Rolex!! Michael and Jedly can help you with that info...

This is the only vintage rolex I own. Starting to feel its a bit of a pain in the butt. Which is a shame because its also my every day watch and I'm quite fond of it.
Ahh wells. I hope all is above board. |

Actually, what did s#!t me about Rolex was that they told me that they were more interested in helping rolex customers. Not collectors who buy second hand watches.
I said. "So a rolex customer is someone who buys a brand new rolex from the store with papers?" Because then hes assuming I only have one watch. I told him that I have a rolex that I bought brand new from the store.... Doesn't that make me a rolex customer then? He said yes. But for the other watch not this one. Yeah... that was pretty awesome customer service right there. Apparently owning a vintage rolex makes me more of a collector then a customer. But besides for that. They were pretty helpful. |

If you like the look of the dial, and plan to keep your watch for some time, I would suggest finding an Independent watchmaker. They would most likely have access to the parts needing replacement. Rolex may suggest/requre putting a new service dial in with the service.
