Rolex Oysterdate 6694 with non-luminous dial?
Hi all,
I'm planning to buy an Oysterdate 6694 from 71/72, but I have some doubts about it. Basically, it is a non-luminous dial. In my search, I didn't encounter models like this one: all of them at least feature luminous dot above each hour marker. Moreover, on the dial, there is a "t-SWISS-t" mention, although there isn't any tritium in the dial or the hands. You can find attached some pictures of this watch, so that you can judge by yourself. What do you think about this dial? Is it genuine or has it been redone? Thank you very much for your help! Cheers. |

While non luminous models arent common I've seen a few of them. It looks like it says -t Swiss t- which is how it is printed on my 1972 oyster precision. A straight clear shot of the dial is needed to give you a definitive answer. Usually on redials the t swiss t marking is off, or not there. It also has the same texture silver dials of the era had and it is quite hard to replicate the way the sun reflects in streaks on the dials. Another reason I don't believe it to be aftermarket is I haven't seen non luminous aftermarket sword hands for sale for my Rolex oyster. Which makes me think it's stock or the Lume was removed

It is an incredibly clean dial and watch for being 40+ years old, so it is entirely possible that the dots were removed at some point in time. Rolex did produce watches without any lume in the 60's and 70's, the most famous being the CERN dial Milgauss.

I was going to say the dots have likely been removed...but then the hands would have to have been, too, as they are plain metal.

I've seen this dial and hand combination before. Iirc, it's a service dial as well as the hands. I think.

For reference, here is a straight on photo of my 6694 (circa 1967). If you're only dealing with photos before purchase I'd ask for a straight on dial shot to see the most of the dial.

Like I said, it's fine. Seen dial and hand combinations like this before on the 6694, just not sure if they're service dials

Thanks Jonas, sending the bracelet to Michael Young next week to be restored, and going to polish the center links!
