What it means by "DateJust" ?

A few people have asked my that "what it means by Datejust in Rolex watch? I'm scatching my head a little and pretend like I know something "Mean it has the Date on it" ...?

Please help me here so I can give out correct information!

Thanks

My understanding is that the Date = Date Function and Just = Automatically Adjusting.

Guys am I on the right track? Please correct me if I am wrong.

I know we've discussed this before, but it's been a long time. I'm going to say that around the time the model was originally introduced, it was called the "Date Adjust" or something along those lines. In typical Rolex fashion, the two words were squeezed into one, and we got "Datejust."

Yes, it being unique allows them to trademark it as well so no one else can say it.

At the time of the introduction of the DateJust, Hans Wildorf was already working on the Day-Date, so he named his new watch is just the date the DateJust.

Or at least that's what a guy with six Rolexes on each arm in Pirate's Alley in New Orleans told me one night after several hours of hard drinking at Johnny White's Sports Bar.

My understanding is a bit different from the above. I heard they named the watch "Datejust," because it turned the "date" over "just" at midnight.

And even if that's true, it's a bit misleading, as we all have Rolex's that have a little bit of leeway regarding when the date is turned.

That must be the correct explanation..

Perhaps the name comes from the introduction of the quickset feature and it alluded to the date being independently adJUSTable. Just a guess...

From my understanding and I forget which issue I read this...it was one of the issues of Watchtime, Datejust came from the phrase "just in time."

This referring to the quick snap snap of the date during a date change....while some watches at the time slowly rotates half way and changes and Rolex was one of the first with the snap change.

interesting...does that mean that rolex is the "owner" of the idea of watches that have adjustable dates?

what about the other watches that also have adjustable dates?

I heard the same thing too.

The name has more to do with the date changing with a snap to the next date.

My Omega, for a modern day watch, changes half way past 11:30 and changes around midnight.

The Rolex stays the same date and snaps....looks more precise that way.

The half way change bothers the heck out of me.

Especially on the ones that change the date at noon.

Why not call it a JustDate then?
Then you can have a DayDate or JustDate

Would it then be appropriate to call an Air King a NoDate?

Assuming. One of the above answers has some validity; what is the difference between the oyster date and the datejust?

On the current models, mechanically, they're identical. The differences are only cosmetic - the Date comes in a 34mm Case, the Datejust (in the equivalent men's model) in a 36mm case. You get some slightly different dials on the Date, only get the option of the Oyster bracelet and the choice of the engine turned bezel as well as domed and fluted.

Thank you all for your inputs but...what is it? I'm still confused?

It got to do with:

Date
Adjustable of the date
the superior of date change on midnight (or somecases at noon! )
Just the model name
Because it's catchy!
Ritedate was before Justdate then later datejust?
When you feel jubilee then your date(is)just?

Can't be all right? can they?

I read somewhere that "Date" is the date (of course), and the "just" part of the compound word means something akin to correct. Perhaps something between "justice" and "right." I believe it might come from a language other than english or was poorly translated into english. So in summary Datejust means "the absolutely, correct Date."

It's because you have to change the date 5 times every year. If it was a calendar the name will only be Just.

It means besides the time, the only extra you get is Just the Date.

A throwback from some time ago.

that would be interesting if the element of 'justice' is really included.

Perhaps we need A Theory of (Date) Justice
