Ok this is controversial, strap yourself in....

There are two distinct types. An early 'Burford' style coronet like a vase of flowers here;

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/rol..._lBgeTz&pos=34

Then there is a common splayed coronet here:

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/rol...c_a0Uijo&pos=2

Now the two controversial ones....and the last one is especially controversial, as it questions the short-run touted by many folks see last but one, old thread !!

I believe this traditional coronet version/font below, differs to the one above, so that might makes 3 std dials :

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/---..._9jjMba&pos=73

And then, wait for it, the Matte Pallettoni, a full set here:

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/rol..._cgwFzp&pos=10

All but my third one are discussed here including another member (chopperboys) 1985/6 matte full set here:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=36048

There is also the comex here :https://coron.et/auction-report/auct...x-relationship

One last observation, be careful..... there are 74 for sale on C24 and at least 3 (4%) have fake dials !!

So its the Burford type dial that intrigues me as to maybe it was a different dial maker Stern maybe ? I have no idea and there is very little info out there !
Thanks

Interesting stuff. I don't see any here that are the so-called Mark I dial, with the "Z" at the beginning of "Submariner." I assume that's yet a different variation.

Oh yes thanks Aaron forgot that one. That makes possibly 5 std dials, one here :

I suspect, whoever makes the MK1 16750 matte, which has a Burford Style coronet is likely to same manufacturer -see here:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=77719

PS for newbies this is what Burford style coronet is in this brilliantly informative link btw - scroll to bottom and 6538 Burford Explorer dial shows the style, also Maunder Watch link on a sold one :

https://www.blackbird-watchmanual.co...38-submariner/

From what I've seen/read, these so-called "Zorro" dials are the rarest of the bunch, for whatever that's worth.

Todays specious quiz - I dont have the answer btw - what makes this 168000 worth OVER 4 times the usual amount of £8-10,000 ?
