Question from Newbie
Hi all, quick question regarding a watch I just put on hold. It's a 16013 1987-88 two tone on a leather strap, excellent condition. It's through Bob's Watches. I'm new to the world of Rolex and luxury watches, but I absolutely love the timeless, classic, clean look of this watch. Price is around $3900. I've seen similar ones priced in the high $4k range. Does it seem like I'm getting a decent deal?
Also, when I inquired with the sales rep about the watch holding it's value, she said it wouldn't be worth as much as if it was in a steel Rolex band, but should hold it's value. I don't plan on selling it, but would like to hope that in 10-15 years it would be worth at least what I paid for it. What do you all think? Thanks! |

So…sounds like a reasonable deal — hard to say more without pictures.
Vintage Dates and DateJusts are solid watches with a classic look. They’ve gone up steadily in value over the past several years. No one can say whether or not they will continue to climb, but it’s a good bet that they will continue to be desirable watches, since they already have been for many decades. Bracelets are readily available if you decide you want one. |

Thanks so much for the feedback. That’s what really caught my eye, it just looks like such a timeless piece. With it being my entry piece into Rolex, the price was right and it was just exactly the understated, classic look that I was going for. You’re right about the bracelet, it’ll always be an option if I decide. Can’t figure out how to post a picture, or maybe I’m not allowed since I just joined? At any rate, thanks again for the input!

It will hold its value more or less, and probably appreciate. Nobody takes a bath on a vintage DateJust.
Get a bracelet for it as per Nick's suggestion, then you can switch between leather and steel occasionally for a completely different animal. You can either get a new bracelet (Jubilee or Oyster) directly from Rolex for ultimate solidity and security, or source a period-correct vintage one on this forum for old-school charm. |

You don't get a deal from Bob's watches, but you can be pretty confident it's legit. If you go to sell it in the near future, you will definitely lose money, but with any luck, you will be above water within a few years.

[QUOTE=pauldavidthorpe;12327760]Dan's on the money with Paul Altieri and Bobs watches. You can get a nice old steel and gold jubilee with end links second hand anywhere from £750/$1000 upwards. A 62523H like this btw.
Thanks! I think I’d like the option to swap the leather to jubilee at times so I’ll definitely look into that. |
