What do you love MOST about Vintage?

Gents:

I am a recent, first time vintage owner. I just picked up a 1665 and it is sweeeeet.

I also am fortunate enough to own a 16600, which is also AWESOME. And, i am surprised by how different the two are.

As a recent owner, I have obviously been studying my watch and staring at it for hours and hours and I really am loving all the vintage aspects - domed crystal, matte dial, no WG surrounds, larger hour markers, etc.

But, my question to you is: What do you love MOST about vintage that modern Rolexes don't possess? What draws you to vintage aesthetically?

For me, it is the domed crystal. The way that it changes the look of the dial depending on the angle you glance at the watch - its just too cool.

Hope everyone is having a good Friday.

V/R

For me it's the patinated lume, shouts out character on a vintage!

Patina! Character is the most important trait of all. Yuppies always buy new while connoisseurs appreciate something aged to perfection. :-)

The well used 'old' vintage look with the faded dials and domed plexi glass. What I don't like are the super flimsy folded bracelets!

Chamfers, plexi, faded inserts, matching tritium pearls, matte dials, Pcg's, gilt, red writing, drilled lug holes, folded bracelets! So much character

It actually takes time, effort and patience to buy a vintage.

It's not mainstream.
Not that Rolexes are, but vintage is that much more unique.
Have had mine from new (1972) and it's my daily wearer.

For many of the reasons listed above: patina, age, style, I actually like them more than the modern watches, plus many of the ones I buy (since I don't own a Newman or DRSD) are a much better value to me than the modern Rolex. So while I like all the design elements others mentioned, I think the value of what you get for the same amount of money as a new Rolex is much higher!

Plexi and brushed silver date wheels with open 6 and 9 plus other cool number fonts (4 and 3).

I just love the different look of the matte dial compared to modern.

I think it is the dials and they just seem more comfortable.
I know my 1675 wore easier than my SD.
Also I like the lug holes.

The fact that some yahoo cannot walk in to the nearest mall/shopping district and pick one up. The vintage pieces are more unique, it takes knowledge, time and a bit of luck to get great piece.

I like the way they look and the fact mine have been around as long (or longer) than I have.

Also like that they don't make them anymore, and made a lot fewer of them than in the modern era. I see modern Rolexes quite often, have yet to run across anyone in the wild wearing one like mine.

I'm sure I've said this here before, but ... there's something neat about having a piece of machinery that's about as old as I am, that's still functioning.

And I have also never seen another model like mine in the wild.

I'm old enough to remember the 60s, so I like the connection to my youth. To me a vintage watch from that era gives the same thrill as reading an old Life magazine from the same period. I get transported back in time vicariously. It's pretty cool.

Patina, matte dials, fat font inserts, plexi, and less clunky then a new Rolex. Vintage is beautiful.

I think you've captured everything about vintage Rolex. So simple looking yet elegant, and will stand up to great abuse.
