Definitive Series: 50th Anniversary LV Green Submariner Photo Collection & Discussion
Rolex created this watch to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner. How is it different than a standard sub? Rolex added the Rolex Green Bezel, Maxi Marker indices, and gave it a fatter minute hand.
A watch with many nicknames: The Kermit, LV, Green Sub. I noticed it looks a lot like the Starbucks Logo and since it seems to emit energy (think caffeine) from the metallic green bezel that the standard black submariner does not I call it the Starbucks Submariner. Some people like the black sub better. They say it is classic. I like the Green Sub much, much, much better. I actually had a black sub and it drove me crazy every time I would look at photos of the LV because the LV looked so much more modern, aquatic, masculine and fun. I think the classic black sub has a very masculine body but the hands and indices on the dial look petite and anemic to me. This is just my opinion, but I believe the bigger indices and fatter hand is more consistent, masculine and organic looking. This of course is ironic because the older subs without the metal ring around the five minute marker indices actually have markers that are more in line size wise with the LV markers. In many ways the LV sub represents a bridge from the old school to the new school sub which should be coming out next year at Basel. Rolex is very, very conservative with the Submariner because it has always been its bread and butter. It is perhaps the most iconic watch ever made. Most modern sports watches including all the Rolex sports watches are derivative in one way or another. James bond was one of the first to wear it and some of those old stainless subs have recently sold for close to $250k. Rolex is very picky and careful with the design of the sub, so when they introduced the LV 50th Anniversary sub they clearly thought it through very carefully. Some people as you will see switch their bezel back and forth between the LV Green and Black. By the way, I think Rolex should create multiple colors in the future and let you decide which you like. This thread is for any pictures related to the LV as well as any ideas or observations you wish to share. You can add side by side comparison photos, for instance showing a normal sub next to and LV, or a black LV. I intend to do more "Definitive" Photo Collections for different watches in the future and the next will be on the Stainless GMTII-C. Why create a Definitive Rolex Series? To help people decide what the watch will look like if they purchase it as well as a reference. In my mind the thing that sets the Definitive Series apart is that it is like a photographic PHD that is fun. It poses a great question and offers great answers and insight into the defined topic. I hope you enjoy. Paint It Black...
I have the funiest story to share with you about changing the bezel from green to black:
I started another thread named: Black Bezel LV 50th Anniversary Submariner (Photos) http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=39019 In that thread a member named Julio César from Mexico shared this tale of separation anxiety. Julio wrote: "I had the black bezel insert in my LV for only two hours before I started crying for the green bezel back!!! I don´t know why but the two hours with the black bezel were two hours of sadness? I went to eat lunch with my wife and I did not enjoy the food. I finished lunch and I ran back to the watchmaker to put back the green bezel. There is your answer. Green bezel rocks!!!!!!" Jocke added this superb link to how he retrofitted an older sub with LV components : http://www.watchwallpapers.com/snd.htm

Hi Rudolph!!!
Another funny story for you! When I first joined the forum, I thought like other forum members that your Avatar was actually you. I remember thinking, "This guy looks classic, cocky and Cuban." It was not for a few weeks that I realized it was a photo of Che Guevara.

Green bezel is HIDEOUS ...
Hey another great post and set of photos.
Green bezel is absolutely hideous and has no classical elements in my opinion. Also the maxi dial is far too BUSY ... when you look at other watches with clean faces you'll notice how important the thinner hands are. But hey thats just my opinion. GREAT SHOTS and good post. |

It is rummored that Rolex has figured out how to do a Green Ceramic Bezel...So what would will the next generation stainless Rolex Submariner look like when it is introduced at Basel 2009?
I created this image to illustrate what I think they might look like...

Hi Jim!!!
Thank you for sharing your kind words with me and I am inclined to agree with you. Jade is green isn't it!?!? I was thinking about you because I forgot to mention something last time we spoke/jousted: My dad was good pals with the original Joker, Cesar Romero. He was actually Cesar's agent in Hollywood at the William Morris agency in the late 1950s & 1960s. Warmest, Jake

Great pics - but like Trini, I much prefer the black bezel and non-Maxi dial. The only one here I would consider buying is your red sub design, unfortunately it's not real.
Thanks for all your efforts though.

Cool Jake....IMHO nobody can beat Cesar as the clown prince (I always loved the fact that he kept his 'tache under the greasepaint.
If the Joker wore a Rolex it would have to be the LV or GMT...what else would match those outfits!!!! In fact, in his and your father's honour I think I'll have a quick change of costume. J |
