'74 Tudor Day Date question

My father-in-law just gave me a '74 tudor day date. He wore it for ~10 years and it has been in a drawer ever since. It is in great shape. I will get it serviced soon as it has never been serviced. But my question is this: how do I set the date and day? I can change the day by just spinning the hours around but I could not find a "notch" on the crown for changing the date or day.

I am hopeing that I do not have to just keep spinning until it happens to be the right day and date.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,
Usually from 1974 a watch would be non quick set day/date so you would only find one notch on the winding stem after you have unscrewed the thread to winding point.
if this is the case the date is usually set by turning hands until they go past midnight and click the date and the day will follow, if not turn the crown anti-clockwise and it should change the day, while keeping the date correct.

Congrats on a cool watch. How large is it? Some of those older Tudor Date+ Day references are the larger 38mm Rolex Oyster case. I recently purchased an early 70's Tudor DD w/ rotating bezel [7020/0].
Anyhoo, to answer your question, you rotate the hour hand as you stated to change the date. Once you have done that so it reads the date before the date you want to set [ie if you are setting it for today you would move the hour hand so the date reads the 19th]. Then push the crown in all the way. Then, pull the crown out and move the hour hand backwards till the DAY reads the day before you want to set [ie Thursday]. Then push the crown in. Next, move the hour hand forward to set the correct time and date and both the day & date will move and will be correct. Hope that makes sense. Kinda wordy but it's pretty easy.
Good luck and how about some pics?
A few pics of mine.

They should call that watch the DD Tudor MENSA model. Geez, for me it would only be good to tell time with. What day? What date? I would never have a clue. By the way, nice watch.

The Tudor DD is much easier to set than to explain. Unless you move the date too far.

I wasn't far off considering I've never owned one?
My Tudor Prince California only has a date to contend with and luckily it is QS.
I do like that bezel Dan

Okay, according to the below link it seems that the Tudor DD and Rolex DD are set the same way. No wonder since Tudors were made by Rolex at the time. Nice to know.

"Crown Positioning for Winding and Setting Your Rolex":

"Day-Date (non-quickset models)

Pos. 1 - Wearing position:
Fully screwed-down crown. In this position the watch is sealed tight providing full protection for the movement. The watch is ready to be worn.

Pos. 2 - Hand winding position:
Crown unscrewed counterclockwise to the point where it is free of the screw threads. In this position the watch is ready for manual hand winding by turning the crown clockwise approximately 40 full times. If the watch has not been worn for 1 or 2 days, it will be necessary to rewind the watch in order to fully charge the movement and to guarantee that it will run properly.

Pos. 3 - Day and Date change position:
Crown pulled out to the last notch. Position for setting both the day of the week and the date. First, the date is set by moving the hands clockwise past the midnight position two times. Once the date has been set, the day of the week is set by moving the hands counterclockwise past the midnight position two times. The second hand is stopped automatically and will not advance again until the crown is pushed back to Position 2 (does not apply to watches produced before 1972). This is the same position for setting the time.

Pos. 3 - Time setting position:
Crown pulled out to the last notch. Position for setting the time by moving the hands either clockwise or counterclockwise. The second hand is stopped automatically and will not advance again until the crown is pushed back to Position 2 (does not apply to watches produced before 1972). Once the time and date has been set, screw the crown back in tightly to make the watch pressure-proof once again."

Thanks guys, I figured it out. This one is not a hackable movement, or at least that feature is not functioning. I am sure it was made pre '72 though, as it was a 25 year service award in january '74.

It has never been service and I will check how accurate it is and get it service asap. I really want to wear it but I am afraid I will do damage to the movement as I am sure all oils are dried up and the water proof seals gone. But it is in great shape and I will post pictures when I get home sun-mon.

Again thanks for help

Looking forward to the pics because I also have a 1972 'Jumbo' Tudor Date-Day in S/S. They are a nice watch indeed IMHO.

Mine is a TT on the original dark brown leather strap with rolex insignia. In fact everything is "Rolex" except for the dial. Also, this one has to be 38mm as I am used to a 44 and this one seems fine on size.

Bo,
As usual, you've done it again. Thanks.

Neil,
How 'bout a some pics of your Tudor DD? Love to see it.

Taco,
Mine is nonhacking and although it can be a pain to set it does add to the vintage vibe. My DD has been at my watchmakers since I got it. Hope to get it back soon after I return home. But better safe than sorry so a service is probably in order.

Spark, thanks!

Sure thing Dan:

Here's the 7017/0 'jumbo'

A very crisp 'polar' Tudor Date-Day IMO:

Neil GMT 16750 - just been looking at your posts, too.

Hey - what great Tudors you both have. They're marvellous and you've both posted excellent pictures. I'd love to actually see a Tudor some day.

Here are a couple of quickies. I will get a couple of better pictures when I find some better light.

Also, Where could I find a strap just like the one on it. I want a high quality leather. This one is starting to fall apart and I want to keep it as it is the original with Rolex crown.

Nice looking Tudor - maybe you could try a brown strap as well. Brown and gold go well together.

Neil, great collection ! Could you tell me the model number of your Oyster Date Day with crisp polar dial (the left one of the 3 Amigos Photo), 'cos I'm just wondering if I could buy and put the same dial on a Tudor 94500 Date Day (I haven't bought one yet) ?! Thanks !!!
