Being the proud owner of both, i'd recommend buying the block case GMT IIc, ya know the one with the oversize numbers.
By the way isn't the Sub changing to the same block case.

I have a GMT IIc and a Sub LV and although I really liked the GMT IIc when I first bought it I've decided that I simply appreciate the classic style that much more. From my perspective I'd try and pick up a GMT 16710 with 3186 movement or even consider going for a Sea-Dweller....I picked up my SD yesterday and it's an awesome watch...even better than the Sub date in my opinion.
Bottom line, I think the GMT IIc is a bit too much "in your face" and glitzy. I'm seriously considering flipping mine while it's still in good condition.

I have both...I love both, the new bracelet is soooooo much more substantial that alone makes the decision easy for me

I'm not just talking about number of years, but I believe it was the Submariner that really made Rolex famous. Almost everybody knows the Sub, but I don't think that's true of the GMT Master.

Dave, I think from a historical perspective your spot on. The GMT has spent a lot of time in the shadow of the Sub. Why that is, is the subject of endless debate, but historic valuations seem to be on your side.

It's interesting that not with standing the Subs. history and military background one would think the more complicated watch would have more support. The GMT shares a storied past, but the fame of the Submariner can't be denied.

One wonders if a certain British Agent had worn a GMT what might have been. LOL!

In any event both bring so much to the table.

Whether historic,

Contemporary,

Or the newest,

All are excellent replies and comments,

but my 2 cents...

buy the Rolex! (joking)

I am in the same dilemma, but I have resolved to get the GMT and THEN add a Sub when funds permit...

Both if you can and I know you'll enjoy them both.
If only one, I would choose Sub Date.

Would you use the second (and third) time zone features on the GMT? Would you use the 60 minute timing ability of the sub? I love GMT's but question the utility, at least for me.

Well you did ask for opinions, and we've got them in spades on TRF!!!! I was in the same delima as you 9 months ago and ended buying the GMTII-c. I love this watch. I wear it to work, I travel with it, and I wear it on the weekends. The extension in the bracelet is an added plus now that summer is here! And another plus is the anti-reflective cyclops; the date is much easier to read. But I still have this bizarre obsession to buy a Sub! My current thinking is to go with a vintage / older Sub just to get rid of the nagging feeling.

every watch here looks great and you cant go wrong with either but this is what most of us would do we would get another credit card and by them both or ask for naught percent finance on the second watch I'm sure you would get a great deal. however i have noticed that nearly all of us on this site are not terrible rational when it comes to rolex s and may even part ex the kids or wife for a new rolex so if you do go the hole nine yards we will understand .......................................your wife may not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck

Some wrist shots to compare - including the annoying greeeeeeen...

While I'm at it you might even consider a Milgauss or whatever.
