2000 Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust Ref. 17000 P Series SOLD

The Rolex Oysterquartz debuted in 1977 after five years of testing and development of the first in-house Rolex quartz movement, the caliber 5035 (and 5055 for the Day-Date). It used 11 jewels, a high frequency oscillator, and even had analog thermocompensation. It was also finished much more beautifully than the typical utilitarian finish work on their mechanical calibers, with geneva stripes and polishing on the outer plates.

Rolex was confident enough in the 5035 that the Oysterquartz caliber remained unchanged throughout its production run from 1977 to 2001, as did the case and bracelet design for the most part.

The case and bracelet are the most obvious unique features on the Oysterquartz. Gone are the slim, tapered lugs and crown guard found on the rest of its line, and in their place a chunky, angular design was developed. The design called back to the very early Viceroy and Imperial Rolex shapes before the signature oyster case came into production. While the watch typically appears chunky and oversized in photographs, the OQ case and it's wide, tapered oyster bracelet is thin and extremely comfortable on the wrist, and wears just like you'd expect with a Rolex. The chamfered and polished edges of the case and bracelet give the watch a great little splash of detail to go along with the smooth polished steel bezel. The Oysterquartz is often an overlooked piece of horological history because it's powered by a battery rather than a mainspring (a battery that Rolex changes for free, by the way), but the unique case and bracelet design and technological superiority to other quartz movements of the period really give this watch its own identity in the Rolex lineup.

The watch we have here is a reference 17000 Datejust in stainless steel with a flat link, tapered oyster style bracelet. It's from the P series, dating the watch to 2000, meaning this is one of the last Oysterquartz watches to ever be produced, and is one of very few with a factory Luminova dial and hand set. Case: 36mm stainless steel case in very good condition as pictured. The case sides show some moderate wear and nicks but the case is thick with its polished chamfers intact.

Bezel: Fixed smooth stainless steel bezel in excellent condition as pictured.

Dial/Hands: Original dial and handset free from any flaws. The dial and hands are factory Luminova, only found on the final runs of Oysterquartz watches.

Caseback: Original caseback in very good condition with the caseback sticker still mostly intact.

Crystal: Original sapphire crystal in very good condition. There is one small area of rash on the edge near 4 o'clock that does not impede visibility.

Movement: Original Rolex caliber 5035 in excellent working condition with all functions working as they should. Service history is unknown.

Bracelet/Strap: Original bracelet in excellent condition as pictured. Currently sized to fit a 7.25" wrist.

Box/Papers: None, sold as watch only.
